Requirements to study in the USA from Ghana: full checklist
To study at a US university from Ghana you need five things: a strong SHS record with WASSCE results, any tests your universities require, a complete application with essays and recommendations, proof that your studies are paid for, through aid or family funds, and an F-1 student visa. The first three get you admitted, the fourth funds you, and the fifth gets you there.
What do I need to study in the USA from Ghana?
Five things, in this order: a strong SHS record with WASSCE results, any tests your universities require, a complete application, proof that your studies are paid for, and an F-1 student visa. The first three decide whether you are admitted. The fourth decides whether you can afford to go. The fifth gets you there.
Most families focus on the first three and discover the fourth too late. For a Ghanaian student, funding is not a final step: it shapes which universities you apply to from the start.
What is the full checklist?
Here is every requirement, with where to find out more:
| Requirement | What it means | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| SHS record | Your grades from SHS 1, on an official transcript | Transcripts from a Ghanaian SHS |
| WASSCE results | Sent when WAEC releases them, or predicted before | Applying before WASSCE results |
| Tests | The SAT or ACT where required; an English test only if not waived | Do you need the SAT? |
| Application | Common App or a university portal, with essays and activities | How to apply |
| Recommendations | A counsellor and two teachers | Asking for recommendations |
| Funding | Aid forms, or proof that your family can pay | How financial aid works |
| Passport | Valid well beyond your first year | Apply early in Ghana |
| I-20 and visa | Issued after admission and proof of funds | What to do after admission |
What academic results do I need?
There is no single pass mark. Selective US universities read your whole SHS record, your WASSCE results and your school's context. The universities that fund international students best mostly admit students at or near the top of their schools. Others admit a wider range.
What matters most is that your grades are strong for your school, in demanding subjects, and rising rather than falling. Our guide to explaining Ghanaian grades shows how your school can give readers the context they need.
Which tests do I need?
It depends on each university. For 2026-27 entry, Harvard, MIT, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Penn and Stanford are among those that require the SAT or ACT. Others are test-optional. In Ghana, the SAT costs $111.
An English test is often not needed. Many universities waive it for students taught in English for several years; Penn, for example, waives it after three years of English-medium study. Check each university's rule before you pay for a test. Our guide to TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo explains the choice.
What goes into the application?
Your personal details and activities, a personal statement of up to 650 words, each university's supplement essays, your school's transcript and report, and recommendations from a counsellor and two teachers. Most universities use the Common App; a few, such as MIT, use their own portal.
Each part takes time, and the school's part depends on other people. Start in the summer before your final year. Our month-by-month plan shows the order.
How do I show I can pay?
In one of two ways. If you need aid, you file each university's aid forms, usually the CSS Profile, by its aid deadline, with your family's documents. A university that meets full need then covers the gap between its cost and what your family can pay.
After admission, the university asks for a certification of finances showing that the first year is covered: by your aid, your family's funds or both. It needs this before it can issue your I-20. Our guide to the certification of finances explains it.
What do I need for the visa?
A valid passport, your I-20, the SEVIS fee receipt, a completed DS-160 and an interview at the US Embassy in Accra. The officer will want to see that your studies are funded and that your plans make sense. Our guide to the SEVIS fee and DS-160 walks through the forms.
Apply for or renew your passport early. It should be valid well beyond your first year, and it takes time to issue.
What does it cost to meet these requirements?
Less than families fear, if you use waivers. The main costs are application fees, often $60 to $90 per university, the CSS Profile fee for each university that uses it, any SAT sittings, and later the SEVIS and visa fees. Many universities waive application fees for students who cannot pay, and some charge no fee at all. Our guide to applying without application fees shows how.
Plan these costs as a family before you start, and ask for every waiver before you pay.
Do I need an agent to meet them?
No. Every requirement on this page can be met by a student and family working together, with free help from EducationUSA in Accra and Kumasi. Some families choose to pay for help with the list, the essays or the aid forms, because those are where mistakes cost most. If you do, choose someone who tells you who pays them and promises nothing they cannot control. Our guide to what study abroad help should cost explains what to expect.
When should I start?
About eighteen months before you want to start university. For entry in August 2027, that means starting in early 2026: building the list, planning tests and gathering family documents. Our guide to planning from SHS 1 covers the earlier years.
What should I do first?
Write the checklist above on one page, and tick what you already have. Then list your universities and check, for each, its testing policy and its aid for international students. Those two answers decide most of what comes next.
