Applying to US universities before WASSCE results

The short answer

Yes. Most Ghanaian students apply in SHS 3, before they sit the WASSCE, and US universities expect it. You apply with your SHS grades so far, send your mock results in the new year, and send your WASSCE results when they come out in August. Keep your grades steady, because a big drop in August can make a university think again.

Can I apply to US universities before I sit the WASSCE?

Yes, and most Ghanaian students do. US deadlines fall in November and January. You sit the WASSCE from April to June and get your results in August. So you apply with the grades you have, and send the WASSCE later.

Universities that admit Ghanaian students know this calendar, and applying before your results does not count against you. Two things matter: the grades you send in the autumn are honest, and your WASSCE tells the same story when it arrives.

What do I send in the autumn?

Your SHS grades so far and your counsellor's report. You do not send these yourself: your school does.

  • Your transcript. Your term results from SHS 1 onwards, on school letterhead, signed and stamped. Your counsellor uploads it.
  • Your counsellor's report. It describes your school and your subjects, and gives an honest prediction of how you will do in the WASSCE.

On the Common App, you list the WASSCE as an exam you will sit. Our guide to entering WASSCE grades on the Common App shows exactly where each of these goes.

What do I send during SHS 3?

Your mock results and your latest term grades, through the Common App's midyear report. Your counsellor sends this report in the new year, once your mocks are marked.

Many Ghanaian schools hold mocks in SHS 3, ahead of the WASSCE. Your mock results are the closest thing to a WASSCE a university can see before August, so ask your counsellor to send them as soon as you have them.

Two tracks across the SHS 3 year. The US track: applications in November and January, decisions in March and April, accept by 1 May, arrive in August. The Ghana track: SHS 3 term results, mocks early in the year, WASSCE from April to June, results in August. The WASSCE results arrive at about the same time the student leaves for the US.
The two calendars barely touch. Your WASSCE results arrive as you are packing, so the grades you send in the autumn have to carry your application.

What do I send in August?

Your WASSCE results, sent quickly, in the way your university asks. Results come out in August, often just before you fly, so get ready before results day.

  • Keep your index number and exam details safe. You need them to check your results and to ask WAEC to send them.
  • Check how your university wants the results. Some want them straight from WAEC. American University, for example, says WAEC results must come to it directly from the exam body. Others accept them from your school.
  • Ask your counsellor to send the final report. It confirms you have finished SHS.
  • Do not leave it until the week you fly. Your I-20 and visa interview usually come before your results, so August is already busy.

If WAEC withholds or delays any of your results, write to your university the same day. Say which subjects are affected, what WAEC has told you, and when you expect an answer. A university that hears from you can wait. One that hears nothing may assume the worst.

Does applying before my results affect my financial aid?

No, not for need-based aid. Universities work out need-based aid from your family's income and assets, on the CSS Profile or their own form, not from your WASSCE. Your aid offer arrives with your admission offer in the spring, months before your results.

Merit scholarships can be different. A university that awards merit money on your grades may ask to see your WASSCE before it confirms the award, so read the conditions in your offer letter. Either way, file your aid forms by the same deadlines as everyone else. Our guide to how US financial aid works explains the difference.

What if my results are worse than expected?

Tell your university before it finds out. It may write to you, ask for an explanation or, in serious cases, withdraw your offer, but that is uncommon. A university that hears early and honestly has more ways to help.

Most of the time, nothing happens. If your WASSCE matches the grades you sent, or beats them, the university simply files the results. Problems start when the results fall well below your autumn grades across several subjects.

If you had a good reason, such as illness during the exams or a family emergency, say so plainly in your email, with any evidence you have.

If you might resit a subject, ask your university first whether it matters. Some will not need a resit, some will want one, and a few may make it a condition. If you do need one, WAEC runs private WASSCE sittings twice a year, in January to February and in November to December, each with its own registration window. For the January to February 2027 sitting, WAEC Ghana's registration ran from mid-September to the end of October 2026.

Should I wait and apply after my results instead?

Usually not. Apply in SHS 3: your teachers know you well, your record is recent, and you start university on time.

Waiting only makes sense if your SHS grades are much weaker than you expect your WASSCE to be. Even then, waiting means a gap year, which has its own costs. A middle path works better for most students: apply in SHS 3 to the universities your current grades fit, and apply again with your results if it does not work out.

What should I do now?

Ask your school three questions this term. Will it produce a transcript? When are the SHS 3 mocks? Will your counsellor send a midyear report? The answers shape your whole application year.

You can manage all of this with your school and each university's own instructions. If you would like help planning SHS 3 around both calendars, you can book a call with us.

Questions people ask

Can I apply to US universities before I write the WASSCE?

Yes, and most Ghanaian students do. US deadlines fall in November and January, months before you sit the WASSCE. Universities decide on your SHS grades, then you send your WASSCE results when they come out in August.

What do I send instead of WASSCE results?

Your SHS grades from SHS 1 onwards, which your counsellor uploads as a transcript, and your counsellor's report with an honest prediction of your WASSCE. Send your mock results when you get them.

Can a US university withdraw my offer if my WASSCE is poor?

It can, but it is uncommon. A university admits you on the grades you sent in the autumn. If your WASSCE is much worse, it may write to you, ask for an explanation or, in serious cases, withdraw the offer. If something went wrong, tell the university before it finds out.

What if I need to resit a WASSCE subject?

Ask the university that admitted you first, because it decides whether a resit matters. If it does, WAEC runs private WASSCE sittings twice a year, in January to February and November to December.
