Do Ghanaian students need the SAT for US universities?

The short answer

Yes, for many of the universities that fund international students best. For 2026-27 entry, Harvard, MIT, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Penn and Stanford are among those that require the SAT or ACT. Others, such as Columbia this year, are test-optional. Check each university's policy for your year of entry, then book a test date early: in Ghana, the SAT costs $111, and the last dates this autumn are 7 November and 5 December.

Do I need the SAT to apply to US universities from Ghana?

Yes, for many of the universities that fund international students best. For 2026-27 entry, Harvard, MIT, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Penn and Stanford are among those that require the SAT or ACT. Others are test-optional, and some do not look at scores at all.

So the honest answer depends on your list. If it includes the universities that meet full need, you will almost certainly need a test. Plan for it.

Which universities require the SAT, and which are optional?

Policies fall into three groups, and many universities have moved between them since 2020:

PolicyWhat it meansExamples for 2026-27 entry
Test-requiredYou must send SAT or ACT scoresHarvard, MIT, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Penn, Stanford
Test-optionalYou choose whether to send scoresColumbia, for this cycle only; it will require scores from August 2027
Test-blind or test-freeScores are not consideredA smaller group of universities

Policies change, sometimes from one year to the next. Columbia, for example, is optional for 2026-27 but has announced required testing from August 2027. Read each university's own testing page for your year of entry before you decide anything.

Can WASSCE results stand in for the SAT?

Only in limited cases. Harvard says that in exceptional cases where the SAT or ACT is not accessible, other results can meet its requirement. These include externally assessed national leaving exam results or predictions, which can include the WASSCE.

That is an exception for students who genuinely cannot reach a test, not a general alternative. Most universities that require testing expect the SAT or ACT. If you think you cannot sit one, write to each university's admissions office and ask before you rely on an exception.

What SAT score do I need?

There is no pass mark. Each university publishes the middle 50% range of its admitted students' scores, and that range is your guide. A score in or above it means the test supports your application. A score below it means the rest of your application has to work harder.

At the most selective universities, those ranges sit near the top of the 1600 scale. That does not mean every admitted student scored there: a quarter of them scored below the bottom of the range. Readers judge your score alongside your school, your grades and the chances you had to prepare.

If you sit the SAT more than once, many universities consider your best section scores across sittings, often called superscoring. Others want every score you have, or your single best sitting. Each university's testing page says which. So a second attempt rarely hurts you, and often helps.

Set a target from the ranges of the universities on your list, not from what a friend scored. Then prepare until your practice scores reach it.

Should I take the SAT or the ACT?

Either. Universities that require testing accept both equally, and none prefers one over the other. Most Ghanaian students take the SAT, because its dates and centres are easier to find in Ghana.

If you have already prepared for one, stay with it. Switching tests late costs time you need for your essays. Whichever you take, check that your dates and centres work before you commit.

How much does the SAT cost, and where do I sit it?

The SAT costs $111 for a student in Ghana: a $68 registration fee plus a $43 international fee. Late registration and some score services cost extra. You sit it on a laptop or tablet, through the College Board's Bluebook app, at an authorised test centre.

Centres in Ghana are mostly in and around Accra and Kumasi. You choose yours when you register. Seats can fill weeks before a test date, so register as soon as you know your date.

When should I sit it?

Early enough to sit it twice before your deadlines. The October 2026 date has passed, so for students applying this cycle, the remaining dates are:

  1. 7 November 2026

Scores may arrive too late for 1 November early deadlines, but in time for many 15 November ones. Check each university.

  2. 5 December 2026

Usually the last date for regular deadlines in early January.

  3. March to June 2027

Further dates, too late for this cycle but right for students a year younger, or planning to reapply.

If you are in SHS 2, aim to sit your first SAT in the spring or summer, so you have the autumn of your final year for a second attempt.

How do I prepare?

With free official practice, mainly. The College Board's Bluebook app includes full-length practice tests in the same digital format as the real SAT. Khan Academy offers free SAT practice linked to the College Board.

A sensible plan has four steps:

  1. Sit one full practice test to find your starting score.
  2. Work on your weakest areas for several weeks, little and often.
  3. Sit a second practice test under timed conditions.
  4. Book the real test when your practice scores are close to your goal.

Paid classes can help some students, but they are not necessary. Many students prepare well using the free official material alone.

Should I send my score to a test-optional university?

Send it if it helps you. Compare your score with the middle 50% range of each university's admitted students, which most publish:

  • At or above the middle of the range: send it. It supports your grades.
  • Well below the range: leave it out, and let your grades, essays and activities carry the application.
  • Near the bottom of the range: a judgement call. A score that matches strong grades helps; one that contradicts them may not.

At a test-required university, there is no choice to make: you send your best score.

What should I do first?

Check the testing page of every university on your list and write "required", "optional" or "not considered" next to each one. If any say required, register for an SAT date this term.

Questions people ask

Is the SAT compulsory for Ghanaian students?

Not everywhere, but at many selective universities, yes. Harvard, MIT, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Penn and Stanford are among those that require the SAT or ACT for 2026-27 entry. Others are test-optional. Each university's own testing page is the authority.

How much does the SAT cost in Ghana?

$111: the $68 registration fee plus a $43 international fee. Late registration and extra score reports cost more. Ask the College Board or your school whether you qualify for a fee waiver.

Where can I sit the SAT in Ghana?

At authorised test centres, mostly in and around Accra and Kumasi. The SAT is digital, taken on a laptop or tablet through the College Board's Bluebook app. Choose your centre when you register, and register early because seats fill.

Can WASSCE results replace the SAT?

Only in limited cases. Harvard, for example, says that in exceptional cases where the SAT or ACT is not accessible, externally assessed national leaving exam results or predictions can meet its testing requirement. Do not assume this applies elsewhere.

Should I send my SAT score to a test-optional university?

Send it if it is at or above the middle of that university's admitted students' scores. If it is well below, leave it out and let the rest of your application speak.
