Duke financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)
Yes, Duke gives need-based aid to Ghanaian students, but international aid applicants are read in a separate admission pool and Duke expects to enrol only 20 to 25 aided international students each year. If you are admitted, Duke meets 100 percent of your demonstrated need with a four-year award, and you apply by ticking the aid box and filing the CSS Profile by 3 November for Early Decision or 1 February for Regular Decision.
Does Duke give financial aid to Ghanaian students?
Yes, but only to a small number, and asking for aid affects your chances. Duke says international applicants who want aid are considered in a separate admission pool. Its aid policy says it expects to enrol 20 to 25 international students a year whose full need it meets.
For a Ghanaian family, that is the line that matters. Duke is effectively need-aware for international students: you compete for one of a few funded places, not for a place in the whole class.
If you are admitted with aid, the promise is strong. Duke says it meets 100 percent of each admitted student's demonstrated need. International students get a four-year award that renews automatically, so your family knows the cost from the start.
What are Duke's aid rules and deadlines?
Duke reads you in a separate pool for aid applicants, meets full need if it admits you, and wants the CSS Profile with your application. Here are the details for students entering in autumn 2027, from Duke's pages for the 2026-27 admissions cycle, as published in October 2026:
- Aid for internationals: separate admission pool for aid applicants, about 20 to 25 aided international students enrolled a year.
- Need met: 100 percent of demonstrated need, with a four-year award.
- Aid forms: CSS Profile. IDOC only if Duke asks.
- Early Decision: application by 2 November, CSS Profile by 3 November, extra documents by 15 November. Decision in mid-December.
- Regular Decision: application by 4 January, CSS Profile by 1 February. Decision in late March or early April.
- Application fee: $85, with fee waivers for students with high need.
- Tests: optional for this cycle.
- English test: recommended, not required, if you are not in an English-medium curriculum.
- Interview: optional alumni interview, offered to some applicants.
Duke's aid page still names the "2026-27 CSS Profile". Confirm with the aid office which Profile year to file for autumn 2027 entry.
What would my family actually pay?
That depends on your family's income and assets, which Duke assesses after you apply. Duke's estimated cost for a first-year student in 2026-27 is $103,180 to $103,975. Billed costs are tuition $73,740, fees $3,019, housing $11,560 and food $10,469. Books, personal costs and travel make up the rest.
For international students, Duke budgets one economy round trip a year from your home country's main airport. It also covers the student health insurance charge with grant aid for aided internationals.
Duke's aid policy says packages generally combine grants with self-help: work-study and, depending on income, a loan. Ask the aid office how this applies to an international award. Run Duke's net price calculator for a rough figure, and read our guide to using a net price calculator from Ghana.
How do I apply for aid from Ghana?
Tick yes in the financial aid box on your application, then file the CSS Profile. You skip the FAFSA, which is for US citizens and residents.
- Tick the aid box. If you forget, contact Duke admissions to change it. Duke says international applicants admitted with no aid interest can never apply for aid later.
- File the CSS Profile by 3 November for Early Decision or 1 February for Regular Decision. It opens on 1 October.
- Watch your email. Duke may ask for more documents through IDOC. If it does, send your family's most recent tax forms and an English statement from each parent's employer stating annual income.
- Use the non-filer form if needed. Duke says parents who are not employed or are self-employed can fill out a non-filer form and report yearly income on it.
Every document must be officially translated into English if needed. Send the original and the translation, and show the conversion from cedis into dollars. Our guide to the CSS Profile with self-employed parents helps families who trade or farm.
What is Duke looking for?
Ambition, curiosity, talent, persistence, energy and humanity, in Duke's own words. It weighs five main factors: the rigour of your programme, your grades, three recommendations, your activities and the quality of your essays.
Duke says it judges what you achieved within your opportunities and challenges. It values sustained commitment over a long list, and asks you to include family and work responsibilities. Running a family stall or caring for siblings counts.
What should I know about applying from Ghana?
Three practical points.
Tests are optional this cycle. Duke is test-optional for 2026-27 applicants and says students without scores are not disadvantaged. If you do sit the SAT, the last date for Early Decision is 7 November and for Regular Decision 5 December. Our guide on whether you need the SAT helps you decide.
Interviews go to some applicants only. Duke offers alumni interviews to some applicants, by video, and says not being offered one does not affect your chances. Internationals may also send an InitialView interview.
Your WASSCE arrives after admission. Duke asks admitted students to send a final transcript with the Common App Final Report. WASSCE results usually come out in August, so ask admissions how to send them, and do it the day they arrive.
Should I apply to Duke?
Yes, if your record is among the strongest in your school, but only as one reach on a wider list. With 20 to 25 funded international places a year, nobody should count on Duke.
Early Decision is binding. Our guide to Early Decision with financial aid explains the risk. Balance Duke with schools on our list of universities that meet full need.
What should I do first?
Decide on Early Decision or Regular Decision this week. Early Decision means the application on 2 November and the CSS Profile the next day, so your parents' income records need to be ready in October.
If you would like help with the CSS Profile and Duke's document requests, our Scholarship and Aid Sprint is built for that.
