Early Decision when you need aid: a guide for Ghanaians
Yes. You can apply Early Decision, the binding early round, and still ask for full financial aid. If the aid offer does not make attending possible, the agreement releases you. Apply this way only to a university that meets full need for international students, and file its aid forms by the early deadline. If the offer is enough, you must withdraw every other application, in any country.
Can I apply Early Decision if I need financial aid?
Yes. Several universities that meet the full need of international students accept Early Decision applicants who ask for aid. They judge you on the same aid formula as everyone else.
Early Decision is a binding promise: if the university admits you, you go. When you need a full scholarship, that promise works differently from the way it works for a family paying full fees. So the real question is whether you should, and at which university.
Which universities fund international students in Early Decision?
Dartmouth, Amherst, Bowdoin and Columbia are four. Each offers Early Decision and publishes a commitment to meet the full need of the international students it admits. These are the universities where Early Decision with aid makes sense.
| University | Admission for internationals | Need met | Early Decision aid deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dartmouth College | Need-blind | Full demonstrated need | 1 November |
| Amherst College | Need-blind | Full calculated need | Check the aid page |
| Bowdoin College | Need-blind | Full calculated need | Check the aid page |
| Columbia University | Need-aware | Full demonstrated need | CSS Profile by 15 November |
Need-blind means the university ignores your aid request when it decides whether to admit you. Need-aware means it can take the request into account. That matters more for internationals, because the aid budget for international students can be smaller.
This list is not complete, and policies change between cycles. Before you choose an Early Decision university, find its international aid page and look for two sentences. One says it meets full need for international students. The other says whether admission is need-blind for them. If you cannot find the first, do not apply Early Decision there expecting a full scholarship.
Does asking for aid in Early Decision hurt my chances?
Not at a need-blind university: it decides on admission without regard to whether you asked. Dartmouth's policy explicitly covers Early Decision candidates. A need-aware university can weigh your request, in Early Decision as in any other round.
Early Decision does change the size of the pool. Fewer students apply early, and the university can see who has committed to it. Whether that helps you when you need aid depends on the university. Most do not publish it.
How do I estimate the aid before I apply?
Run the university's own net price calculator, a tool on its website that estimates what your family would pay. Read what it says about international students first. Some calculators say plainly that their figures are not accurate for international families. Dartmouth's page on the MyinTuition estimator it uses is one.
If the calculator does not fit your family, email the aid office. Describe your household in a few lines and give your 2025 income in cedis. Ask whether a family like yours would typically qualify for full aid. Some offices will answer in general terms. A general answer before 1 November is worth more than a precise one in December.
What am I promising when I sign the Early Decision agreement?
You promise that if you are admitted and the aid makes it possible, you will attend. You also promise to withdraw every other application and start no new ones. You, a parent and your school counsellor each sign the Common App's Early Decision agreement.
Two lines in it matter most to a Ghanaian applicant.
"In any country." You agree to withdraw other applications and make no new ones in any country. That covers your UCAS application, Ashesi, KNUST, the University of Ghana and anything in Canada, as well as other American universities. Once you accept an Early Decision offer with enough aid, you cannot keep a UK place as a fallback.
The aid exception. If you are asking for aid, you do not have to withdraw other applications until the Early Decision university sends its aid decision. Your other applications stay live until you have read the offer.
When are the aid deadlines in Early Decision?
About two months earlier than usual. Your CSS Profile, the aid form most private universities use, is due with your early application rather than in January. So is any aid form the university has of its own.
- 1 October 2026
The 2027-28 CSS Profile opens. Start it the same week, because it asks for 2025 income and the documents behind it.
- 1 November 2026
Early Decision application deadline at many universities. Dartmouth's Early Decision aid deadline falls on the same day.
- 15 November 2026
Columbia's Early Decision CSS Profile deadline.
- Mid-December 2026
Early Decision results usually arrive, with the aid offer for students who applied for aid on time. Each university sets its own date.
- Early January 2027
Regular Decision and Early Decision II deadlines at many universities. If you were released, or not admitted early, this is where you apply.
Do not rush the Profile. If your family earns in cedis and you enter figures that are half-converted or guessed in October, the aid offer is built on those figures. And an Early Decision offer is the one you are bound to. Gather the year's documents before the Profile opens, and enter cedis as cedis.
What happens if the aid offer is not enough?
The agreement releases you if the aid offered does not make it possible to attend. Families rely on that protection, and it is real.
It has a limit. The university decides whether its own offer was insufficient, and the agreement does not define the word. A university that meets full demonstrated need has, by its own calculation, offered enough. If your family's view of what it can pay differs sharply from the university's, you discuss the figures you reported. Whether you liked the offer does not come into it.
A release does not cover:
- A better offer from somewhere else. You will not have one, because Early Decision results arrive before most other universities decide.
- A change of heart about the university.
- A family contribution that is affordable but uncomfortable.
If the figure looks wrong, contact the aid office first, with documents that show why. An offer that looks impossible sometimes rests on a figure entered incorrectly, and the aid office can correct that.
So should I apply Early Decision?
Apply Early Decision with aid only if all three of these are true:
- The university meets full need for international students.
- It is your first choice by a clear margin.
- Your family's figures are ready before the deadline.
If any one is not true, apply in Early Action, the early round that does not bind you, or in Regular Decision. You keep your options open and lose only the early answer.
You can make this choice yourself, using each university's own aid pages. If you would rather have someone build the CSS Profile and the aid documents with you before the early deadline, that is what the Scholarship and Aid Sprint is for.
Questions people ask
Can an international student apply Early Decision and ask for financial aid?
Yes. Dartmouth, Amherst, Bowdoin and Columbia meet the full demonstrated need of the international students they admit, including those admitted Early Decision. You file the aid application with the early admission application, usually in early November.
What happens if my Early Decision aid offer is not enough?
The Common App Early Decision agreement releases you if the aid does not make attending possible. Until the aid decision arrives, you can keep your other applications open. The university decides whether its offer was insufficient, so you ask its aid office for the release. You cannot simply tick a box.
Does Early Decision mean I have to withdraw my UCAS or Ashesi applications?
Yes, if you are admitted and accept the aid offer. The agreement asks you to withdraw other applications and make no new ones "in any country". That covers UK, Canadian and Ghanaian universities as well as American ones.
Can I apply without aid to improve my chances and ask for aid later?
At many universities, no. Columbia says international students admitted without requesting aid may not apply for it at any point in their four years. Swarthmore says the same of students who do not ask when they apply. Treat the decision as permanent.
When is the financial aid deadline for Early Decision?
Each university sets its own. Dartmouth's Early Decision aid deadline is 1 November, and Columbia's CSS Profile deadline for Early Decision is 15 November. Check each university's aid page for the cycle you are applying in.
