Amherst financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)
Yes, Amherst College funds Ghanaian students on the same terms as Americans. Admission is need-blind for international applicants, and Amherst meets 100 percent of the calculated need of every student it admits, with no packaged loans. For students entering in autumn 2027, you file the CSS Profile, or Amherst's ISFAA form if the Profile fee is a hardship, by 13 November 2026 for Early Decision or 15 January 2027 for Regular Decision.
Does Amherst give financial aid to Ghanaian students?
Yes, on the same terms as American students. Amherst says it admits international students without regard to their financial need, and awards them aid on the same need basis as domestic students.
Three rules make Amherst one of the strongest options for a Ghanaian family that cannot pay:
- Need-blind admission. Amherst says your family's finances are not considered and have no bearing on whether it admits you.
- Full need met. Amherst meets 100 percent of calculated need for every international student it admits who applies for aid.
- No packaged loans. The first $1,800 of your need is met with a campus job. Everything above that is scholarship you do not repay.
Amherst says 82 percent of its international students received aid in 2025-26, and the average international award was more than $84,000. There are no merit scholarships: need is the only test.
What are Amherst's aid rules and deadlines?
Need-blind admission, full need met, and aid forms due soon after the application. Here are the details for students entering in autumn 2027, as published on Amherst's own pages in October 2026:
- Aid for internationals: need-blind admission, same aid as US students.
- Need met: 100 percent of calculated need, with no packaged loans.
- Early Decision: apply by 9 November 2026. Aid forms due 13 November 2026.
- Regular Decision: apply by 5 January 2027. Aid forms due 15 January 2027. Decisions by late March, reply by 1 May 2027.
- Aid forms: CSS Profile (code 3003) or the ISFAA, plus income documents.
- Application fee: $75, or a fee waiver.
- Tests: SAT and ACT optional.
- English test: required unless you qualify for a waiver (below).
- Interview: none offered.
Check each line on Amherst's site before you apply. Policies and dates can change from one cycle to the next.
What would my family actually pay?
Your family pays what Amherst calculates it can afford, and aid covers the rest of the budget. Amherst expects parents to contribute as far as their income and assets allow, and expects a contribution from you through summer work and savings.
For 2026-27, Amherst lists these costs:
- Tuition: $75,330
- Housing: $10,980
- Meals: $9,340
- Fees: $710
- Personal expenses: $1,800
That is $98,160 before travel. For students living outside the US, Amherst adds one return trip home a year to the budget. Required course materials are covered, and aided students on the college health plan get a Health Insurance Scholarship. Figures for 2027-28 were not yet published in October 2026.
Amherst's cost estimators are not intended for international students, the college says. A Ghanaian family should contact the aid office for an estimate instead. Our guide to using a net price calculator from Ghana explains why the US tools often mislead and what to do instead.
One rule matters for a family paid in cedis. If the exchange rate moves by 10 percent or more from the rate Amherst used, you can ask for a review once a year, in early August or early December.
How do I apply for aid from Ghana?
File the CSS Profile, then upload your parents' income documents to Amherst's Financial Aid Portal. Amherst's CSS Profile code is 3003.
Four rules for a Ghanaian family:
- Report in cedis. Amherst asks you to complete the Profile in your home currency. Do not convert to dollars.
- Send 2025 income records. Upload your parents' 2025 income and tax documents, and an employer's statement of 2025 pay and benefits. Wait for the email with your portal login first.
- No tax return is not a dead end. If your parents file no return, send a statement from each employer giving gross pay, including bonuses and allowances such as housing or a car, plus proof of tax deducted. A bank statement does not count as income evidence.
- Traders and business owners complete Amherst's Business/Farm Supplement and send any business tax documents they have.
Upload everything as PDF, not photos. Amherst requires original signatures, not digital ones. Separated or divorced parents each file their own Profile or ISFAA.
If the CSS Profile fee is a serious hardship, request the International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) through your admission account. Amherst says the ISFAA counts the same as the Profile.
What is Amherst looking for?
Academic strength first. Amherst says it gives the greatest weight to your transcript: the rigour of your courses, your grades and how consistently you worked over four years.
Recommendations, the quality of your writing, and what you do outside class help it choose between strong applicants. For international students, it also considers exam predictions or results, essays, independent work and your achievements outside the classroom. Amherst says no single part decides the outcome.
For a Ghanaian applicant, the best SHS programme open to you, taken seriously, matters more than a long list of clubs. Our guide to explaining Ghanaian grades shows how to help an admissions reader understand your transcript.
What should I know about applying from Ghana?
Four things matter most.
Tests are optional. Amherst says SAT and ACT scores are optional for domestic and international applicants alike. If you send scores and then enrol, you send official reports.
You may not need an English test. Amherst waives the requirement if your two most recent years of secondary school were taught mainly in English. Answer the waiver questions on the Amherst supplement carefully. If you do not qualify, Amherst recommends at least 7.5 in IELTS Academic, 130 in Duolingo or 100 in TOEFL iBT.
There are no interviews. Amherst does not offer them. If you already have an InitialView interview, you may send it.
Your WASSCE comes late. Amherst requires a secondary school diploma or its equivalent before you enrol. WASSCE results usually come out in August. If you are admitted in SHS 3, ask the admissions office early how it wants your results.
Once there, the African and Caribbean Students' Union is listed among Amherst's student groups.
Should I apply to Amherst?
Yes, if your record is among the strongest in your school, and as one part of a wider list. Admission is very competitive, so no one should count on it. Because Amherst is need-blind and meets full need, the main cost is your time and the application fee, which can be waived.
Early Decision is binding. Use it only if Amherst is clearly your first choice. Our guide to Early Decision with financial aid explains the trade-off.
What should I do first?
Ask your parents for their 2025 income records this week: employer letters, payslips and any GRA tax documents. Then decide between Early Decision on 9 November and Regular Decision on 5 January.
If you would like help preparing the CSS Profile and documents for Amherst and the rest of your list, our Scholarship and Aid Sprint is built for that.
