Smith financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)
Yes, Smith gives need-based aid to Ghanaian students, meets the full documented need of every admitted student who applies on time, includes no loans, and gives free tuition to international students from families earning up to $150,000 with assets under $200,000. Smith does not say its admission is need-blind for international applicants, and it describes the international aid pool as highly competitive.
Does Smith give financial aid to Ghanaian students?
Yes. Smith awards need-based aid to non-US citizens and meets the full documented need of every admitted student who applies by the deadlines. Its packages include no loans, and that covers international students.
Getting in with aid is the hard part. Smith says its pool of international aid applicants is highly competitive. It does not say on its public pages that admission is need-blind for international applicants. In 2023 it described need-blind admission as a goal it was still working towards.
So assume your request for aid may be weighed, and ask the admission office if you want to know more. Smith is a women's college: it considers anyone who self-identifies as a woman.
What are Smith's aid rules and deadlines?

What would my family actually pay?
Your family pays what Smith calculates it can afford, and grants cover the rest. For 2026-27, Smith's billed costs are $99,318: tuition $70,460, food and housing $24,520, student activities fee $308 and health insurance $4,030. It adds about $800 for books, $1,000 for international travel and $1,910 for personal costs.
International students on Smith aid get a health grant that covers the college's health insurance. Smith also says a non-US citizen's family contribution stays the same each year, with the grant adjusted around it.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?
File the CSS Profile, then upload your parents' income documents to IDOC by your round's aid deadline. Smith asks for:
- The 2027-28 CSS Profile, opening 1 October 2026, with Smith's code 3762. A separated or divorced parent files a noncustodial Profile.
- A 2025 parent tax return, translated and signed.
- Or, if a parent did not have to file in 2025: Smith's International Parent Non-Filer Form, from its Net Partner portal, with a translated employer income statement.
If the Profile fee would cause real hardship, Smith has a fee waiver request form. A parent who trades or farms has no employer statement, so ask the aid office what to send instead. Our guide to the CSS Profile without tax returns covers the usual options.
What is Smith looking for?
Strong academic records, plus motivation, determination and curiosity. Smith says those are the qualities its board of admission seeks. It reviews each application as a whole, asking what you would bring to the classroom and the community.
Smith recommends four years of English, three of a language, three of mathematics, three of lab science and two of history. For a Ghanaian applicant, show this through your SHS electives and core subjects, and explain any gaps in your school's offer.
What should I know about applying from Ghana?
Three things matter for a Ghanaian applicant.
You probably do not need an English test. Smith exempts students taught mainly in English for their whole secondary school career. Most SHS students are.
Your WASSCE results come later. Smith asks for a final transcript as soon as grades are available. WAEC usually releases WASSCE results in August, so if you are admitted, ask the admission office how to send them. Our guide to applying before WASSCE results explains the timing.
Missing the aid deadline closes the door. Smith says international students who do not apply for aid before admission can never receive its aid.
Should I apply to Smith?
Yes, if you want a women's college and your record is strong, as part of a wider list. The no-loan packages and the free-tuition pledge make Smith one of the more generous colleges for international students it admits. With competitive international aid, no one should count on admission.
Our guide to need-blind and need-aware admission explains how to balance your list.
What should I do first?
Gather your parents' 2025 income records this month, and work out whether each parent will file a tax return or the Non-Filer Form. Then run Smith's net price calculator and choose your round.
