Northwestern financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)

The short answer

Yes, Northwestern gives need-based aid to Ghanaian students, but it is need-aware for international applicants and funds only a small group of international first-years each year. If you are admitted with aid, Northwestern meets 100 percent of your demonstrated need with grants alone, no loans or work, and you apply by filing the CSS Profile or its own ISAFA form by 1 December for Early Decision or 1 February for Regular Decision.

Does Northwestern give financial aid to Ghanaian students?

Yes, but Northwestern is need-aware for international students and funds only a few. It says a request for aid, and the amount you need, may factor into your admission decision. Its aid office adds that the process "will be more competitive" for international aid applicants.

Northwestern describes international aid as a "limited assistance program". Each year, it says, a small group of first-year international students receive need-based aid.

For those admitted, the package is one of the best anywhere. Northwestern guarantees to meet 100 percent of demonstrated need for all four years. For international students it is grants and scholarships only: no loans and no required job. It also counts health insurance, visa renewal costs and a travel allowance in your budget.

What are Northwestern's aid rules and deadlines?

Northwestern is need-aware for you, meets full need with grants if it admits you, and sets two aid dates for each round. Here are the details for students entering in autumn 2027, as published in October 2026:

  • Aid for internationals: need-aware admission, for a small group.
  • Need met: 100 percent of demonstrated need, grants only, for four years.
  • Aid forms: CSS Profile or Northwestern's ISAFA, plus your parents' income documents.
  • Early Decision: application by 1 November 2026, CSS Profile or ISAFA by 1 December, income documents by 5 December. Decision in mid-December.
  • Regular Decision: application by 4 January 2027, CSS Profile or ISAFA by 1 February (the aid office's page says 2 February), income documents by 5 February. Decision in late March.
  • Application fee: $75, or a fee waiver.
  • Tests: optional.
  • English test: only if English is not your first language and your school did not teach in English.
  • Interview: optional, through InitialView.

Northwestern says your aid offer is the same whether you apply Early or Regular Decision. Check each line on its site before you apply.

What would my family actually pay?

That depends on your family's income and assets, assessed after you apply. Northwestern's 2026-27 cost for a student living on campus is $99,375: tuition $71,802, fees $1,260, housing and meals $22,941, books $1,239, personal costs $2,079 and loan fees $54. Transport varies.

Health insurance is not in that total. Every student needs cover, and Northwestern's 2026-27 student plan is estimated at $5,996. Its international aid packages count health insurance in your costs.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?

Tick yes to aid on your application, file the CSS Profile or the ISAFA, then send your parents' income documents. Northwestern's Profile code is 1565.

  1. Tick the aid box. If you forgot, email nuinternational@northwestern.edu before the aid deadline.
  2. File the CSS Profile, or the ISAFA. Northwestern says international students cannot get Profile fee waivers from College Board. If you cannot submit the Profile from Ghana, or the fee would be a real hardship, use Northwestern's ISAFA form instead.
  3. Send income documents. Upload your parents' latest national tax forms. If your country has no annual tax form, send an official letter of earnings from each parent's employer, signed or stamped.
  4. Translate and label. Documents need an official English translation, with the exchange rate shown if you convert to dollars. Add Northwestern's cover sheet, and your full name and date of birth on every page.

Separated or divorced parents each file their own Profile. If you have no contact with one parent, contact the aid office. Our guide to CSS Profile fees and waivers explains what the Profile costs.

What is Northwestern looking for?

Academic curiosity, involvement in your communities, and a clear sense of how you would thrive at Northwestern. Its admissions office describes "fit" as a story you tell about yourself on campus, not something you either have or lack.

Its readers ask what topics excite you, how you have challenged yourself, and what role you play in your family, school or religious community. Northwestern also says it understands that some school systems leave little time for activities. It still encourages you to pursue them, organised or not.

What should I know about applying from Ghana?

Three points for a Ghanaian applicant.

The SAT is optional. Northwestern says applying without a score will not affect your chances. If you send one, you can self-report it. Our guide on whether you need the SAT helps you decide.

Your WASSCE matters after admission. Northwestern says that where finishing secondary school depends on an external exam, it still requires those results. Admitted students must arrange for final exam results to be sent. WASSCE results usually come out in August, so ask admissions early how to send them.

Interviews are optional. Northwestern runs interviews through InitialView and says applicants who do not interview are not disadvantaged.

Should I apply to Northwestern?

Yes, if your record is among the strongest in your school and its programmes suit you, as one part of a wider list. Because only a small group of international students get aid each year, nobody should rely on it.

Early Decision at Northwestern is binding. Read our guide to Early Decision with financial aid before choosing it.

What should I do first?

Decide this week whether the CSS Profile fee is affordable or whether the ISAFA is your route. Then ask your parents for their tax forms or employer letters, so the documents follow your form within days.

If you would like help preparing the Profile or the ISAFA for Northwestern and the rest of your list, our Scholarship and Aid Sprint is built for that.
