Macalester financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)

The short answer

Yes, Macalester gives need-based aid to Ghanaian students and meets the full demonstrated need of every student it admits, but admission is need-aware for internationals: your financial need is a factor in the decision. Applicants whose families can pay less than $40,000 a year face the stiffest competition, and Macalester says it has given them extra consideration in Early Decision.

Does Macalester give financial aid to Ghanaian students?

Yes, but asking for aid can affect your chance of admission. Macalester says financial need plays a role in its admission decisions for international students, because its aid budget is not unlimited. That makes it need-aware.

What it promises is this: if you are admitted, Macalester meets your full demonstrated need. There is no minimum family contribution, so for some families the aid covers the whole estimated cost of attendance.

The hard part is getting in with high need. Macalester says international students whose families can contribute less than $40,000 a year face the greatest competition. That describes most Ghanaian families who need aid.

What are Macalester's aid rules and deadlines?

Need-aware admission, full need met, and aid forms due about a week after the application. Here are the details for students entering in autumn 2027, as published on Macalester's pages in October 2026:

  • Aid for internationals: need-aware. Full demonstrated need met for every student admitted.
  • Merit aid: the Charles J. Turck Presidential Honor Scholarship, up to $40,000 a year, for a limited number of internationals. No separate application.
  • Aid forms: the CSS Profile or the ISAFA, plus the Macalester Financial Declaration Form.
  • Early Decision I and Early Action: apply by 1 November 2026. Aid forms due 10 November.
  • Early Decision II: apply by 1 January 2027. Aid forms due 8 January.
  • Regular Decision: apply by 15 January 2027. Aid forms due 22 January.
  • Tests: SAT and ACT optional.
  • English test: optional.
  • Interviews: no online interviews for international applicants.

Macalester will not consider your application at all if you ask for aid and the two aid forms are missing. Check every line on Macalester's site before you apply.

What would my family actually pay?

Your family pays what Macalester calculates it can afford, and the aid covers the rest of the estimated cost. For 2026-27, Macalester's comprehensive fee is $92,154: tuition and course materials $74,394, residence hall $9,268, meal plan $8,162 and activity fee $330. Health insurance adds $3,329.

An aid package usually mixes grants, a campus job and sometimes a loan. Macalester says grants make up more than 80 percent of its aid. The job is about nine hours a week and earns about $3,600 after tax in the first year. Some internationals are also offered a Macalester College International Student Loan.

Macalester's estimating tools do not work for families living outside the United States. It asks those families to contact the aid office directly. Our guide to using a net price calculator from Ghana still helps you work out your figures in dollars first.

Your package is set for eight semesters. Macalester says the amount cannot be revised once you arrive, so report your family's finances fully at the start.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?

Send either the CSS Profile or the ISAFA, plus the Macalester Financial Declaration Form, by the aid deadline for your round. The Declaration Form is on the applicant checklist in your Macalester portal.

The ISAFA, the International Student Application for Financial Assistance, is the cheaper route. Macalester gives no CSS Profile fee waivers to international applicants, and says you may use the 2027-28 ISAFA instead if the Profile fee is a burden.

Macalester's international aid page does not list which income documents it wants from parents who file no tax return in Ghana. Ask the aid office before the deadline what to send for a parent who trades or farms. Our guide to the CSS Profile without tax returns covers the usual options.

What is Macalester looking for?

Strong grades in demanding courses come first. Macalester says your classroom performance is the most important part of your application. It reviews each application as a whole, weighing grades in context, recommendations, essays, leadership and activities.

For a Ghanaian applicant, that means your SHS results and the strength of your programme matter most. A test score is optional, and Macalester says leaving it out will not count against you.

What should I know about applying from Ghana?

Three things matter for a Ghanaian applicant.

Your mock results can count as your in-progress grades. Early Decision applicants report first-term grades on an In-Progress Grades form. Macalester says students in a non-US curriculum can use mock exams from the latest term, a progress report, or predicted results instead.

No English test is needed if you were taught in English. Macalester recommends one only if English is not your first language and you have had fewer than two years of schooling taught mainly in English. Most SHS students are taught in English, so check which applies to you.

There is no online interview. Macalester cannot offer online interviews to international applicants. You may send an InitialView or Vericant interview, and Macalester says not having one will not lower your chances.

If you are admitted in Regular Decision, ask the admissions office how and when it wants your WASSCE results. Macalester's pages do not set a date for them.

Should I apply to Macalester?

Yes, if it is your first choice and you need aid, because Early Decision is where Macalester says it has been most open to high-need internationals. Early Decision is binding, so read our guide to Early Decision with financial aid before you commit.

If you are applying Regular Decision with high need, treat Macalester as one reach among several. Our guide to need-blind and need-aware admission explains how to balance a list.

What should I do first?

Email Macalester's aid office this week for an estimate, since its online calculators do not cover families in Ghana. Then decide between Early Decision I on 1 November and Early Decision II on 1 January.
