Grinnell financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)

The short answer

Yes, Grinnell funds Ghanaian students, but it is need-aware for international applicants, so asking for aid makes admission harder. Grinnell meets 100 percent of calculated need for the international students it admits, provided they file the CSS Profile or Grinnell's ISAFA by their application deadline, and it does not consider aid requests after admission.

Does Grinnell give financial aid to Ghanaian students?

Yes, but Grinnell is need-aware for international students, and that changes your odds. Grinnell says it considers your financial need alongside your grades and activities. The more aid you need, the more competitive admission becomes.

If you are admitted, Grinnell meets 100 percent of the need it calculates for you. It uses grants and a campus job, not loans. That promise holds only if you file the aid forms by the deadline for your application round.

For a Ghanaian applicant, this means two things:

  • A large aid request makes admission harder. You compete for a limited number of funded places.
  • Admission comes with the money. If Grinnell admits you on aid, it covers the need it calculates.

Grinnell also says outstanding international applicants may be considered for merit scholarships, whatever their need.

What are Grinnell's aid rules and deadlines?

Need-aware admission, full need met for those admitted, and aid forms due with the application. Here are the details for students entering in autumn 2027, as Grinnell published them in October 2026:

  • Aid for internationals: need-aware admission.
  • Need met: 100 percent of calculated need for admitted students who file on time.
  • Aid forms: the CSS Profile (code 6252) or Grinnell's ISAFA.
  • Early Decision I: 15 November 2026.
  • Early Decision II: 5 January 2027.
  • Regular Decision: 15 January 2027.
  • Late aid requests: not considered once you are admitted.
  • Application fee: none.
  • Tests: SAT and ACT optional.
  • English test: required if English is not your native language or language of instruction.
  • Interview: not required, and no preference for those who have one.

What would my family actually pay?

Your family pays what Grinnell calculates it can afford, and Grinnell covers the rest with grants and campus work. Grinnell says aid supplements what a family can pay, and expects your family contribution to rise a little each year as costs rise.

For 2026-27, Grinnell lists tuition of $73,582, an activity fee of $572, housing of $8,316, food of $9,468 and $1,100 for personal costs. With transport, the total starts at $93,338. Grinnell estimates transport for students from outside the US at $1,300 a year.

Campus work is part of the package. Grinnell paid $13.77 an hour in 2025-26, and international students can work up to 20 hours a week on campus.

Grinnell's net price calculator is not for you: Grinnell says its calculators are intended for domestic applicants who live in the US. Our guide to using a net price calculator from Ghana explains what to do instead.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?

File the CSS Profile, Grinnell code 6252, by the deadline for your round. The Profile opens on 1 October each year. If your parents live apart, the other parent completes a Profile too, unless the College Board grants a waiver.

Grinnell does not give fee waivers for the CSS Profile. If you cannot complete the Profile, you can submit Grinnell's own International Student Application for Financial Assistance (ISAFA) instead, through the Grinnell applicant portal. Our guide to the ISFAA and the CSS Profile explains how these alternative forms work.

Fill in the form carefully. Grinnell bases its offer on what you report, and the offer is final. Our guide to the CSS Profile with no tax returns shows how to report income for a parent who trades or farms.

What is Grinnell looking for?

Academic excellence and active involvement outside class. Grinnell says students who show both are especially attractive to its admissions committee, regardless of financial need.

For a Ghanaian applicant, that means strong SHS grades in demanding subjects, and activities you have stuck with. A science club you ran, a church choir you led, or work in a family business all count. Our guide to the Common App activities list shows how to describe them.

What should I know about applying from Ghana?

Four things matter most.

Tests are optional. Grinnell is test-optional, and accepts official or self-reported SAT and ACT scores if you send them.

An English test may be required. Grinnell asks for one if English is not your native language and/or was not your main language of instruction. It accepts Duolingo, IELTS and TOEFL iBT. If you grew up speaking Twi or Ga at home, ask admissions whether your English-medium SHS is enough, or take the test.

Grinnell requires your WAEC results. It lists WAEC and SSSCE among the national exams it requires. In SHS 3 your WASSCE results will not arrive until August. Ask admissions how to submit them, and send your mock results meanwhile.

Interviews are optional. Grinnell does not require them and gives no preference to applicants who interview.

Should I apply to Grinnell?

Yes, if your record is strong and you want a small liberal arts college, but go in with open eyes. Because Grinnell is need-aware, a large aid request makes your application more competitive. Because it does not charge an application fee, the cost of trying is your time.

Balance it with need-blind schools on your list. Our guide to need-blind and need-aware admission explains the difference.

What should I do first?

Choose your round this week. Then start the CSS Profile, or the ISAFA if the Profile is not possible, so it goes in by 15 November, 5 January or 15 January.

If you would like help preparing Grinnell's aid forms, our Scholarship and Aid Sprint is built for that.
