Bowdoin financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)

The short answer

Yes, Bowdoin funds Ghanaian students. Bowdoin is need-blind for international students and meets the full calculated need of every student it admits, with scholarships and a campus job rather than loans. International applicants send aid documents only after admission, and must do so within seven days of the offer.

Does Bowdoin give financial aid to Ghanaian students?

Yes. Bowdoin says it is need blind for international students, so your family's ability to pay plays no part in admission. If you are admitted, Bowdoin meets your full calculated need with scholarships and a campus job, not loans.

Bowdoin describes itself as one of only eleven US colleges and universities that are need-blind and meet full need for international students. That puts it in a very small group. For a Ghanaian family that cannot pay, it is one of the few places where asking for aid costs you nothing at the admission stage.

Bowdoin's aid package for international students has two parts:

  • Bowdoin Scholarship: grant money that you never repay.
  • A campus job expectation: $2,400 a year, earned on campus.

Bowdoin requires every international student to join its health insurance plan. If you receive aid, Bowdoin says it covers the cost of that cover.

What are Bowdoin's aid rules and deadlines?

Need-blind admission, full need met without loans, and aid forms sent after admission. Here are the details for students entering in autumn 2027, as Bowdoin published them in October 2026:

  • Aid for internationals: need-blind admission.
  • Need met: full calculated need, with scholarships and a $2,400 campus job.
  • Aid forms: sent only if admitted, within seven days of the offer.
  • Early Decision 1: application due 15 November 2026; decision in mid-December.
  • Early Decision 2: application due 5 January 2027; decision in early February.
  • Regular Decision: application due 5 January 2027; decision in mid-March.
  • Application fee: $70, waived automatically if you apply for aid.
  • Tests: optional.
  • English test: optional.
  • Interview: strongly encouraged, not required.

What would my family actually pay?

Your family pays what Bowdoin calculates it can afford, and Bowdoin covers the rest. Bowdoin says the average aid package for incoming students is $72,883 a year. It does not say which year that figure is for.

The full price for 2026-27 is $97,900 or more. Bowdoin lists tuition of $74,268, fees of $700, housing of $10,106 and food of $10,326. It adds $840 for books and $1,660 for personal costs. Transport varies with where home is, so the cost of flights from Accra sits on top.

Bowdoin has a net price calculator and a quick cost calculator, but its page tells students who are not US citizens to contact the aid office instead. Email sao@bowdoin.edu for guidance. Our guide to using a net price calculator from Ghana explains why these tools often miss for a Ghanaian family.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?

You do not send aid forms with your application. Bowdoin says international applicants submit aid materials only if they are admitted. Bowdoin's aid office then sends you detailed instructions.

The timing is tight once the offer arrives:

  • You send everything within seven days of the admission offer.
  • Bowdoin sends its aid decision within seven days of receiving your complete application.

Bowdoin's aid pages name the CSS Profile, the College Board's aid form, and the ISFAA, an alternative form for families who cannot complete the Profile. Confirm with the aid office which one it wants from you once you are admitted.

Most Ghanaian families need time to gather proof of income. A salaried parent needs a letter from the employer stating annual pay. A parent who trades or farms needs a careful estimate. Our guide to the CSS Profile with no tax returns shows how to prepare.

What is Bowdoin looking for?

Bright, engaged students who are curious and willing to take intellectual risks. Bowdoin says it reads for grades, the challenge of your courses, your recommendations and writing, your school and community involvement, and your character.

Bowdoin also wants students who respect different views and backgrounds. A Ghanaian applicant who has led a club, taught younger students, or helped run a family business has something real to show. Our guide to the Common App activities list shows how to describe it.

You need three recommendations, a secondary school report and your transcript. Early Decision 2 and Regular Decision applicants also send a mid-year report.

What should I know about applying from Ghana?

Four things matter most.

Tests are optional. Bowdoin has been test-optional since 1969. You choose whether to send SAT or ACT scores, and you can change your mind until the deadline.

English tests are optional too. Bowdoin accepts TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo and Cambridge English, with no minimum score. It expects every student to be highly proficient in English.

Bowdoin wants your WASSCE results. It says students from countries with national exams, and it names WASSCE, must submit official results. In SHS 3 you will not have them by January. Ask admissions how to send them when WAEC releases them, and send your mock results meanwhile. Your transcript must be in English.

Interviews are open to you. Bowdoin strongly encourages an interview but does not require one. It offers virtual alumni interviews worldwide. Submit your application first: Bowdoin asks international students to do so before requesting one. Alumni interviews run from 1 October to 15 November for Early Decision 1, and to 31 December for the other rounds.

Should I apply to Bowdoin?

Yes, if you have a strong record and want a small liberal arts college. Admission is very competitive, so do not count on it. Because Bowdoin is need-blind for you and meets full need without loans, the main cost of applying is your time.

Bowdoin offers two Early Decision rounds. Early Decision is binding, and you will not see your aid offer until after you are admitted. Read our guide to Early Decision with financial aid before you choose it.

What should I do first?

Pick your round this week. Then start your parents on their income documents now, so they are ready within seven days of a December or March decision.

If you would like help preparing Bowdoin's aid forms quickly once you are admitted, our Scholarship and Aid Sprint is built for that.
