Colby financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)
Yes, Colby funds Ghanaian students, but its admission is need-aware, so asking for aid can affect whether you are admitted. If you are admitted, Colby meets 100 percent of your demonstrated need without loans, and applying costs nothing: there is no application fee and the SAT is optional.
Does Colby give financial aid to Ghanaian students?
Yes, but Colby is need-aware. Asked whether it is need blind or need aware, Colby's own answer is: "Colby is need aware." Your request for aid can be one of the things that decides whether you get a place.
If you are admitted, the promise is strong:
- Full need met. Colby meets 100 percent of demonstrated need for all admitted students, including international students.
- No loans. Colby's aid packages are grants and campus work, not loans.
- Need only. Colby offers no merit scholarships. Your family's finances decide the aid.
What this means for you: a need-aware school sets a higher bar for applicants who need aid, and you cannot see how high. Apply to Colby as one of several schools that fund internationals, and put your best application in front of it.
What are Colby's aid rules and deadlines?
Colby meets full need for those it admits, and the aid deadline falls on or soon after the application deadline. For students entering in autumn 2027, as published in 2026:
- Aid for internationals: need-aware admission.
- Need met: 100 percent of demonstrated need, without loans.
- Aid form: CSS Profile (code 3280).
- Early Decision I: application and aid by 15 November. Decision on or before 15 December.
- Early Decision II: application and aid by 4 January. Decision on or before 15 February.
- Regular Decision: application by 4 January, aid by 15 January. Decision on or before 1 April.
- Application fee: none.
- Tests: SAT and ACT optional.
- English test: required only if English is neither your first language nor your language of instruction.
- Interview: Colby does not offer interviews, but accepts recorded ones from Duolingo, Vericant and InitialView.
An older version of Colby's international page gave a later aid date for Early Decision II. Confirm your round's aid deadline with Colby before you file.
What would my family actually pay?
Your family pays only what Colby calculates it can afford, and Colby fills the rest with grants and a campus job. The full price for 2026-27 is an estimated $97,020 to $98,270:
- Tuition and fees: $75,790
- Food and housing: $19,480
- Personal costs and books: $1,700
- Travel: $50 to $1,300, depending on your home address
First-year students are also billed a $500 fee for Colby's outdoor orientation trips.
Colby publishes income bands for its commitment. A family with total income of $75,000 or less and typical assets has a parent contribution of $0. Up to $200,000, the parent contribution is no more than $20,000. Colby's page does not say whether these bands apply to international families, so check with the aid office.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?
File the CSS Profile with Colby's code, 3280, by your round's aid deadline. On Colby's international page, that is the only aid form listed for international students. Colby asks you not to send any other financial documents unless its team requests them.
If your parents are divorced, separated or were never married, the other parent files the Non-Custodial Parent Profile. Colby also publishes a Non-Custodial Parent Waiver Form; ask the aid office whether it fits your case.
If the Profile fee is a burden, Colby offers a CSS fee waiver. For a family where parents trade or farm without payslips, our guide to the CSS Profile from Ghana shows how to report income honestly.
What is Colby looking for?
Colby looks for intellectually adventurous students with consistent achievement in a challenging programme. It also wants people likely to contribute to a diverse, collaborative community. Colby reads each application as a whole, with no set formula.
Colby asks applicants to tell their story and show dedication both in and out of class. For a Ghanaian student, that can be the subject you took furthest, a club you built, or work you do for your family. Colby needs a counsellor's letter and two teacher letters, so ask your teachers early.
What should I know about applying from Ghana?
Three things matter for a Ghanaian applicant.
You probably do not need an English test. Colby requires TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo only if English is neither your first language nor your current language of instruction. If your SHS teaches in English, check that your counsellor's report says so.
The SAT is optional, but scores are high. Of admitted applicants who sent scores for the class of 2029, Colby reports a median SAT of 1520. If your score is well below that, applying without one may be wiser. Our guide to whether you need the SAT helps you decide.
Plan for WASSCE timing. Colby's pages do not say when it needs final results from WASSCE students. WASSCE results usually come out in August. If you are admitted, ask the admissions office how and when to send them.
Colby also requires every application document in English, whatever your school's language.
Should I apply to Colby?
Yes, if your record is strong and you want a small college with full-need aid. Colby costs nothing to apply to and gives no loans. It is need-aware, so do not rely on it.
Put it on a list with need-blind schools and other full-need colleges. Our guide to colleges that meet full need is a good place to find them.
What should I do first?
Run Colby's net price calculator with your parents this week. Then decide whether Colby is your first choice. If it is, Early Decision I on 15 November is binding and early. If not, aim for 4 January, with the CSS Profile by 15 January.
If you would like help preparing the CSS Profile for Colby and the rest of your list, our Scholarship and Aid Sprint is built for that.
