Carleton financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)

The short answer

Yes, Carleton funds Ghanaian students, but it says its funding for international students is limited and it offers only a few need-based scholarships to them, so admission with aid is need-aware in practice. If you are admitted with aid, Carleton meets 100 percent of your demonstrated need, with no loans from 2027-28, and it advises international aid applicants to apply Regular Decision by 15 January.

Does Carleton give financial aid to Ghanaian students?

Yes, but the money for internationals is limited. Carleton says: "We have limited funding available to international students," and "We offer a few need-based scholarships to international students." It does not say it is need-blind for them, so treat Carleton as need-aware.

If you are admitted with aid, the terms are good:

  • Full need met. Carleton says it meets 100 percent of demonstrated need for every student.
  • No loans from 2027-28. Carleton is replacing all loans in need-based packages with grants and scholarships, for international and domestic students alike. That starts with the class entering in autumn 2027.
  • Fixed for four years. An international student's aid stays at the same level for all four years.

What this means for you: only a few places come with aid for international students, and your request competes for them. A strong Ghanaian applicant can be funded in full, but Carleton should be one school among several.

What are Carleton's aid rules and deadlines?

Carleton meets full need for those it admits with aid, and the aid forms share the application deadline. For students entering in autumn 2027, as published in October 2026:

  • Aid for internationals: limited funding, a few need-based scholarships.
  • Need met: 100 percent of demonstrated need, with no loans from 2027-28.
  • Aid forms: CSS Profile (code 6081, $25 fee) or the free International Student Application for Financial Assistance.
  • Certification of Finances: required from every international applicant, aid or no aid.
  • Fall Early Decision: application and aid by 15 November. Decision on 15 December.
  • Winter Early Decision: application and aid by 15 January. Decision on 15 February.
  • Regular Decision: application and aid by 15 January. Decision on 1 April.
  • Application fee: none.
  • Tests: SAT and ACT optional.
  • English test: required only if you do not speak English at home and have not been taught in English for four years.
  • Interview: optional and informational.

What would my family actually pay?

Your family pays what Carleton calculates it can afford, and Carleton covers the rest. For 2026-27, Carleton lists a comprehensive fee of $94,980 and a total cost of attendance of $97,870:

  • Tuition: $75,186
  • Housing: $10,194
  • Food: $9,120
  • Student activity fee: $480
  • Books and personal costs: $2,040 (estimated)
  • Travel: $850 (average)

Carleton lists health insurance separately, at $2,355. The travel figure is an average, so ask the aid office how it budgets a flight from Accra.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?

Tick the aid box on your application. Then file either the CSS Profile or Carleton's free international aid form, and complete the Certification of Finances in your applicant portal. Carleton says the Certification shows how much your family can contribute.

For most Ghanaian families, the free form saves the College Board fee. Our guide to the ISFAA and the CSS Profile explains the difference. If your parents trade or farm without payslips, write down their real yearly income and how you worked it out. Make the Certification and the aid form tell the same story.

Carleton's public pages do not list the income documents it wants from international families. Check your portal and email financialaid@carleton.edu if anything is unclear.

What is Carleton looking for?

Carleton looks at your whole record and background, then asks about the person behind it. Its strongest candidates have four years of English and maths, and three or more years each of science, social science and a language.

The committee asks: How active have you been in your school and community? Are you someone who will lead? Can you rise to a challenge? Do you have a sense of humour? For a Ghanaian student, that might be a church youth role, a sports team or a school club you ran. Our guide to the Common App activities list shows how to write it up.

What should I know about applying from Ghana?

Three things matter for a Ghanaian applicant.

Apply Regular Decision if you need aid. Carleton says it may admit a few exceptionally qualified international aid applicants in Early Decision, but awards most of its international scholarships in Regular Decision. Our guide to Early Decision with financial aid explains the trade-off.

English is probably covered. Carleton asks for TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo only if you do not speak English at home and have not had four years of classes taught in English. If you test, it looks for TOEFL 100, IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 130 and above.

The SAT is optional. Carleton went permanently test-optional in 2025. If you send scores, they are due by 20 January for Regular Decision.

Carleton's pages do not say when it needs final results from WASSCE students. WASSCE results usually come out in August. If you are admitted, ask the admissions office how to send them.

Should I apply to Carleton?

Yes, if your record is strong and you want a small college in Minnesota with no loans in aid. Applying is free, and the SAT is optional.

The limited international funding means no one should count on Carleton. Put it on a list with need-blind schools. Our guide to colleges that meet full need lists more.

What should I do first?

Run Carleton's cost estimator with your parents this week. Then plan for Regular Decision on 15 January, with the aid form and Certification of Finances by the same date.
