Berea financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)
Yes, Berea College funds every international student it admits, including Ghanaians. Berea says aid and scholarships cover 100 percent of tuition, housing, food and fees for all admitted international students, and you pay a $2,200 deposit, which Berea can reduce if your family cannot afford it. The catch is the odds: Berea admits about 40 or fewer new international students a year and rarely more than one from any country.
Does Berea College fund Ghanaian students?
Yes, every international student it admits. Berea says aid and scholarships cover 100 percent of tuition, housing, food and fees for all admitted international students. There is no separate scholarship to win once you are in. Admission is the award.
Berea is not like the other colleges on this site. It has charged no tuition since 1892. It admits only students with strong academic records and limited financial means. And it is a work college: every student holds a campus job as part of their education.
The hard part is getting in. Berea admits about 40 or fewer new international students a year, from hundreds of well-qualified applicants. It also says it is rare for more than one student from any country to be offered admission in a year. So you are, in effect, competing with every other Ghanaian who applies for perhaps one place.
What are Berea's rules and deadlines?
One deadline, one start date, and full funding for those admitted. Here are the details for international students entering in autumn 2027, as Berea published them in October 2026:
- Funding: 100 percent of tuition, housing, food and fees, for every admitted international student.
- Deposit: $2,200 to confirm your place, reduced if your family cannot afford it.
- Deadline: 30 November 2026, with every part of the application in.
- Decisions: released no later than 31 March 2027.
- Start date: autumn term only.
- Application fee: none. Berea says applying is free.
- Tests: one of TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT or Duolingo, with no exceptions.
- Work: at least ten hours a week in a campus job.
Berea grants no extensions. If you cannot finish by 30 November, it tells you to apply for the following year.
What would my family actually pay?
Very little, and possibly nothing up front. Berea covers tuition, housing, food and fees for every admitted international student. What remains is the $2,200 deposit and your own personal costs.
The deposit works like this:
- You pay it after admission to confirm your place. Berea sends the deadline and payment instructions.
- Berea issues your I-20 only after it receives the deposit and your forms. You need the I-20 for your student visa.
- You can use it later. Berea says the deposit can go towards certain expenses during your four years.
- It can be reduced. If your family cannot afford the full amount, Berea says it will look at your situation and adjust it.
For personal costs, you will rely mainly on your campus wages. Berea says most international students earn over $2,000 during the school year, and can work up to 40 hours a week in holidays and over the summer.
Berea's pages do not say whether flights between Accra and Kentucky are covered. Ask the admissions office before you plan on it. Berea's Financial Freedom Pledge, which starts with the autumn 2027 entry, promises every enrolled student a loan-free degree, with extras such as a laptop. Confirm with Berea which parts apply to international students.
A US net price calculator will not tell you much here. Our guide to using a net price calculator from Ghana explains why, for the colleges where it does matter.
How do I apply for aid from Ghana?
You apply for aid as part of the application itself. Berea does not use the CSS Profile for international applicants. Its checklist for international students is:
- The online application
- Official secondary school records
- A personal essay
- One teacher recommendation
- A Financial Resource Recommendation
- Official test scores
- The International Financial Questionnaire
A personal submission and an activities résumé are optional.
Berea says you do not need to send bank statements with the International Financial Questionnaire. Answer it honestly. Berea looks for students with limited financial means, and financial need is one of the things its committee weighs.
What is Berea looking for?
Strong academics, real financial need, and a clear sense of purpose. Berea's International Admissions Committee reads every eligible application as a whole. It weighs your academic record, your financial need, your ambition and sense of purpose, and your recommendations.
Berea's own advice is to give very careful attention to the personal essay. It says the essay helps the committee know you as a person and understand your purpose. For a Ghanaian applicant, that means saying plainly what you want to study, why, and what you will do with it.
What should I know about applying from Ghana?
Four things matter most.
You need one official test score. Berea accepts TOEFL (68 on the internet test), IELTS (6 overall, with 5 in each part), Duolingo (95), SAT (980) or ACT (19). It almost never accepts a score more than two years old. If the Duolingo fee is a problem, Berea cannot give coupon codes, but it suggests asking your school to request one from Duolingo. Nursing needs a higher score: TOEFL 83, with 26 in speaking.
Berea wants outstanding exam results. It asks applicants to meet the university entrance rules of their own country and present outstanding secondary or leaving exam results. A student in SHS 3 will not have WASSCE results by 30 November. Ask Berea's international admissions office whether to apply now with mock results or after your WASSCE, in a gap year.
You can apply again. Berea says many students who are not admitted apply for the next year. You may send one application per year.
There is no ESL support. Berea does not run English courses, so you must be ready to follow lectures and write essays in English from the first week.
Berea also runs a host family programme, which gives international students a local family in Kentucky.
Should I apply to Berea?
Yes, if your family has limited means and your grades are strong. It costs nothing to apply, and if you are admitted the money is in place. But with one Ghanaian place or fewer in a typical year, no one should count on it. Apply alongside other colleges that fund international students fully.
What should I do first?
Book your English test or SAT this week, so your score arrives before 30 November. Then draft your personal essay, and ask one teacher for a recommendation now.
If you would like help with the International Financial Questionnaire or the aid forms for the rest of your list, our Scholarship and Aid Sprint is built for that.
