Bates financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)

The short answer

Yes, Bates funds Ghanaian students, but it is not need-blind for non-US citizens, so your need for aid can affect your admission. If you are admitted, Bates meets 100 percent of your demonstrated need with no loans, and you apply with its own free form, the BISAFA, instead of the CSS Profile.

Does Bates give financial aid to Ghanaian students?

Yes, but Bates is need-aware for international students. It says it is "not need-blind" for non-US citizens, and that on occasion a student's financial need may affect the admission decision.

If you are admitted, the aid is generous:

  • Full need met. Bates commits to meeting 100 percent of the full demonstrated need of every admitted student, whatever their citizenship.
  • No loans. Bates does not include loans in aid for non-US citizens. Your award is grants and a campus job.
  • Four years. Aid is available for up to eight semesters.

What this means for you: asking for aid makes admission harder at Bates than it would be for a student who can pay. A strong Ghanaian applicant can still be funded in full. Apply, but not to Bates alone.

What are Bates's aid rules and deadlines?

Bates meets full need, gives no loans to internationals, and wants the aid form by its aid deadline. For students entering in autumn 2027, as published in October 2026:

  • Aid for internationals: need-aware admission.
  • Need met: 100 percent of demonstrated need, with no loans for non-US citizens.
  • Aid form: the BISAFA, in your Bates applicant portal. No CSS Profile.
  • Early Decision I: application by 15 November, aid by 15 November. Decision by 20 December.
  • Early Decision II: application by 10 January, aid by 10 January. Decision by 15 February.
  • Regular Decision: application by 10 January, aid by 10 January. Decision by 1 April.
  • Application fee: none.
  • Tests: optional. Bates has been test-optional since 1984.
  • English test: required only if English is neither your native language nor your school's main language of teaching.
  • Interview: not required.

Bates lists its aid deadlines for all first-year applicants, not separately for the BISAFA. Confirm your BISAFA date with Student Financial Services before you file.

What would my family actually pay?

Your family pays what Bates calculates it can afford, and the rest comes as grants and campus work. Bates charges one comprehensive fee. For 2026-27 it is $94,560: $73,760 for tuition and $20,800 for food and housing.

Bates lists these costs on top:

  • First-year fee: $475, once
  • Student health insurance: $2,352 for the full year
  • Books and supplies: about $900
  • Personal costs: about $1,000
  • Travel: about $250 to $1,150

Added together, that is roughly $99,500 to $100,400 for the first year.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?

Tick the aid box on your application, then complete the BISAFA. Bates places the form in your Bates applicant portal. You upload it there after you apply for admission.

Bates uses the BISAFA to set your need for all four years, and it forms part of your admission application. A mistake or a missing figure here can follow you for four years. If your parents trade, farm or work without payslips, write down their real yearly income and how you worked it out. Our guide to the ISFAA and the CSS Profile explains how college aid forms like this one work.

Bates does not list the supporting documents on its public pages. Check your portal and email Student Financial Services at sfs@bates.edu if anything is unclear.

What is Bates looking for?

Bates reads each applicant as a whole person, in the context of their own circumstances. Its admission team wants to know your integrity, your creativity and your way of seeing the world. It weighs your academic preparation, your involvement and impact, and your interest in Bates.

For a Ghanaian student, context matters. Bates reads you within your own circumstances, so make sure your counsellor explains what your SHS offers. Use your activities list to show impact, such as what changed because you led something.

What should I know about applying from Ghana?

Three things matter for a Ghanaian applicant.

The SAT is optional. Bates gives full consideration whether or not you send scores. If you report scores and enrol, it asks for official reports.

Your grades arrive in stages. Bates asks for first-quarter grades by 1 December for Early Decision I. It wants a mid-year report by 1 February for Early Decision II and by 15 February for Regular Decision. Send your SHS 3 first-term results or mocks then. Bates's pages do not give a final-results date, and WASSCE results usually come out in August. If you are admitted, ask how to send them.

English tests must be official. If you need one, Bates accepts TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo, but not self-reported scores. If your SHS teaches in English, you may not need a test. Confirm with Bates.

Interviews are optional. Bates offers informational alumni conversations, and accepts recorded InitialView or Vericant interviews.

Should I apply to Bates?

Yes, if your record is strong and you want a small college that gives no loans to internationals. With no application fee and a free aid form, the cost of applying is your time.

Bates is need-aware, so build a list that does not depend on it. Our guide to choosing universities that fund you shows how.

What should I do first?

Run Bates's net price calculator with your parents this week. Then decide whether Early Decision I on 15 November makes sense. It is binding, so choose it only if Bates is your first choice. Otherwise aim for 10 January.

If you would like help with the BISAFA and the aid forms for the rest of your list, our Scholarship and Aid Sprint is built for that.
