US university application deadlines for Ghanaians
If you are starting at a US university in autumn 2027, apply by 1 or 15 November 2026 for the early rounds, or by 1 to 15 January 2027 for most regular deadlines. Your financial aid forms are usually due on the same days. The Common App closes at 11:59 pm in your own time zone, so in Ghana your deadline falls several hours before New York's.
When are US university applications due for 2027 entry?
In two waves. Early deadlines fall mostly on 1 or 15 November 2026. Regular deadlines fall mostly between 1 and 15 January 2027. Each university sets its own dates, and a few use other dates or admit on a rolling basis.
For a Ghanaian student, your real deadline is usually earlier than the date on the website, for three reasons:
- Your financial aid forms are often due on the same day, or before.
- The deadline runs to midnight in Ghana, not in America.
- Most schools in Ghana break for Christmas just before the January wave.
What are Early Decision, Early Action and Regular Decision?
They are the rounds you can apply in, and each carries a different promise:

What are the deadlines at the most selective universities?
For the cycle that opens in autumn 2026, the most recent published lists give these dates:

Dates change between cycles. Confirm every one on the university's own admissions page before you build your calendar around it.
What about rolling admission and later deadlines?
Apply to them in the autumn anyway. Some universities admit on a rolling basis, deciding on applications as they arrive. Others have deadlines in February or later.
If you need aid, later is rarely better. Aid budgets for international students are limited. At a rolling university, the money can be gone before the last applications are read. So send a rolling application alongside your early ones, not in the spring after everything else is done.
Is the financial aid deadline the same?
Often, or very close. Dartmouth's Early Decision aid deadline is 1 November, the same day as the application. Columbia's Early Decision CSS Profile, the aid form most private universities use, is due 15 November.

What time on the deadline day is the application due?
By 11:59 pm in your own time zone, according to the Common App. Ghana is on GMT all year, so in Accra your deadline closes at midnight Ghana time. In New York it is still early evening.
Do not leave it to the last hour. Power cuts, slow connections and payments that fail at the final screen are common enough in Ghana to plan for. Submit at least a day early. Go earlier still if your application fee has to go through a parent's card.
Some universities set their own time for their own forms, so read each deadline as the university states it.
How does the Christmas break affect the January deadlines?
Your school documents have to be uploaded before your school closes for Christmas. Your transcript, your counsellor's letter and your teachers' recommendations all come from people who are on holiday just before the January deadlines.
Ask for every school document by late November. A recommendation from a teacher who has travelled home for the holidays may not arrive by 1 January.
Do I need my WASSCE results before I apply?
No. The WASSCE timetable does not line up with the US cycle, and universities know it. The 2026 WASSCE for school candidates ran from April to June, and WAEC released results in August. So there are two kinds of applicant:
- If you are in SHS 3 now, you apply this autumn with your school results and predicted grades. You send your WASSCE results when they come out the following August.
- If you finished SHS in 2026, you apply with your results in hand.

What should I do now?
Make one calendar. For each university, write down three dates: the application deadline, the aid deadline, and the date you need every school document by. Then set your own deadline a week before the earliest of them.
