Pomona financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)
Yes, Pomona funds Ghanaian students, but admission is need-aware for international applicants, so your request for aid is weighed when Pomona decides. If you are admitted, Pomona meets 100 percent of your demonstrated need without loans, and you can apply with the CSS Profile or Pomona's own free international aid form.
Does Pomona give financial aid to Ghanaian students?
Yes, but admission is need-aware for you. Pomona says its admissions committee takes financial need into consideration when it decides on international applicants. Asking for aid can make admission harder.
If Pomona admits you, the money follows your need:
- Need-aware admission. Pomona weighs your need when it decides. A Ghanaian applicant asking for full aid competes for a limited number of funded places.
- Full need met, without loans. Pomona says it meets the full need of every admitted international student. Loans are available, but Pomona does not use them to meet need.
- Need-based only. Pomona gives no merit or athletic scholarships. Its international page says 41 percent of its international students receive need-based aid, averaging nearly $74,000 a year.
What are Pomona's aid rules and deadlines?
Need-aware admission, full need met, and aid forms due a week after the application. Here are the details for students entering in autumn 2027, as published on Pomona's own pages in October 2026:
- Aid for internationals: need-aware admission.
- Need met: 100 percent of demonstrated need, with no loans in the package.
- Early Decision I: apply by 8 November 2026. Aid forms by 15 November.
- Early Decision II: apply by 8 January 2027. Aid forms by 15 January.
- Regular Decision: apply by 8 January 2027. Aid forms by 15 January. Decisions by 1 April.
- Aid forms: CSS Profile, or Pomona's International Financial Aid Application.
- Application fee: $80, waived through the Pomona Access Pass form if you are applying for aid and the fee is a hardship.
- Tests: optional.
- English test: required only if English is not your school's main language of instruction.
Pomona says its international aid application for 2027-28 reopens in mid-October 2026, with updated deadlines and forms. Check each line on Pomona's site then, before you apply.
What would my family actually pay?
It depends on your family's need, and Pomona meets all of it if you are admitted. Without aid, the cost is close to $100,000 a year.
For 2026-27, Pomona lists tuition of $71,660, fees of $420, and housing and food on campus of $23,590. That makes $95,670 in billed costs. Travel and personal costs add $1,500 to $2,600. Pomona's student health insurance, about $3,312, is compulsory for international students.
Pomona says international students can claim back the cost of one trip home during their four years. Your aid does not change after the first year: Pomona assesses it once, at admission.
Pomona offers a net price calculator for an estimate. Our guide to using a net price calculator from Ghana shows how to convert cedi figures and read the result.
How do I apply for aid from Ghana?
Choose one aid form, then send your parents' income documents. Pomona asks international applicants for:
- An aid form. Either the CSS Profile, school code 4607, or Pomona's free International Financial Aid Application. You need your Pomona admissions ID for the Pomona form.
- Income documents. A translated copy of your parents' tax documents or a statement of earnings, for the year Pomona names.
- A non-filing statement if a parent did not file and was not required to file a tax return.
- The other parent's details if your parents are separated or never married. On the Profile, the other parent files their own. On Pomona's form, you report both parents' income.
If you use the Profile, you upload documents to IDOC, the College Board's document service. If you use Pomona's form, you upload them to the Pomona admissions portal.
Pomona accepts a statement of earnings as well as tax documents. For a Ghanaian parent paid in cash or running a shop, ask the aid office what statement it will accept before you upload.
What is Pomona looking for?
Curiosity, and evidence that you contribute to the people around you. Pomona says it looks for intellectual curiosity and a passion for learning. It also wants to hear about your lived experience and how you engage with communities outside the classroom.
Pomona says it judges each international applicant in their own local context, not against US applicants. For a Ghanaian student, leading a youth group or running a family business counts. Our guide to the Common App activities list shows how to describe it.
What should I know about applying from Ghana?
Four things matter most.
Tests are optional. Pomona says there is no advantage to sending an SAT or ACT. If you send the ACT, it must include the Science section.
English test only if needed. If English is not the main language of instruction at your school, Pomona requires 100 on the TOEFL iBT, 7 in IELTS or 130 on Duolingo. Most Ghanaian SHS teach in English, so check whether this applies to you before you pay for a test.
Interviews are optional. Pomona accepts third-party interviews through InitialView, Vericant and Duolingo. They cost money, so Pomona does not require them.
WASSCE timing. Pomona requires a final official transcript before you enrol. Its pages do not give a date. WASSCE results usually arrive in August, so if you are admitted, ask the admissions office how and when to send them.
Should I apply to Pomona?
Yes, if your record is strong and Pomona is one part of a balanced list. Need-aware admission makes a full-aid application from Ghana hard, so no one should count on it. If you are admitted, Pomona meets your full need without loans.
The free international aid form also makes it one of the cheaper strong colleges to apply to. See our list of universities that meet full need to balance it.
What should I do first?
Decide whether Early Decision I on 8 November is right for you. It is binding, so apply that way only if Pomona is your clear first choice and your aid forms can be ready by 15 November. If not, plan for 8 January and 15 January.
If you would like help preparing your aid forms for Pomona and the rest of your list, our Scholarship and Aid Sprint is built for that.
