Middlebury financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)

The short answer

Yes, Middlebury funds Ghanaian students, but it says it is need-aware in admitting international students, so asking for aid can affect your chances. If you are admitted, Middlebury meets your full need as it calculates it, and you must file the CSS Profile online with your application, by 1 February 2027 for Regular Decision.

Does Middlebury give financial aid to Ghanaian students?

Yes, but admission is need-aware for you. Middlebury's admissions office says plainly that it is need-aware in its admission of international students. Its aid office puts it another way: need-blind for internationals only "to the extent that financial resources allow".

Either way, a Ghanaian applicant asking for aid should expect that request to be weighed. Here is what each side of the promise means:

  • Need-aware admission. Middlebury is need-blind for domestic applicants, not for you. A full-aid application from Ghana competes for a limited budget.
  • Full need met once admitted. Middlebury says it meets the full need, as its aid office calculates it, of any international student it admits. For internationals, it says that aid combines work, loans and grants, with at least a minimum family contribution.
  • Need-based only. Middlebury gives no merit scholarships.

What are Middlebury's aid rules and deadlines?

Need-aware admission, full need met, and the CSS Profile due by each round's aid deadline. Here are the details for students entering in autumn 2027, as published on Middlebury's own pages in October 2026:

  • Aid for internationals: need-aware admission.
  • Need met: full need, as Middlebury calculates it, for admitted students.
  • Early Decision I: apply by 2 November 2026. CSS Profile by 15 November. Decisions mid-December.
  • Early Decision II: apply by 4 January 2027. Middlebury's aid office lists the Profile deadline as 3 January 2027, so aim for that.
  • Regular Decision: apply by 4 January 2027. CSS Profile by 1 February 2027. Decisions late March.
  • Aid forms: CSS Profile online, school code 3526, then documents through IDOC. No ISFAA and no paper Profile.
  • Application fee: none. The application is free from the 2026-27 cycle.
  • Tests: optional.

Check each line on Middlebury's site before you apply. Policies and dates can change from one cycle to the next.

What would my family actually pay?

It depends on the need Middlebury calculates, and it meets all of it if you are admitted. Without aid, the cost is close to $100,000 a year.

For 2026-27, Middlebury lists tuition of $72,924, a student activity fee of $542, and housing and food of $20,920. With $1,000 each for books, transport and personal costs, its total is $97,386. Middlebury also requires health insurance, which is not in that figure.

Middlebury says it is tuition-free for families earning up to $175,000. Its pages do not say whether that applies to international students, so ask the aid office before you count on it.

Middlebury has a net price calculator, but it says its calculators are not designed for international students. Treat any result with caution. Our guide to using a net price calculator from Ghana explains what to do instead.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?

File the CSS Profile online, then upload your parents' documents to IDOC, the College Board's document service. Middlebury asks international applicants for:

  1. CSS Profile. Online only, school code 3526. If your parents are separated or never married, both complete a Profile.
  2. Income documents. Your parents' 2025 non-US tax forms, or an earnings statement, translated into English.
  3. Earnings statement. A signed letter in English from each employer giving total gross pay and benefits for January to December 2025.
  4. Non-filing statement. On IDOC, if a parent filed no tax return and has no employer earnings statement.

The CSS Profile has a fee. Middlebury relies on the College Board's own fee waivers and does not issue its own. Our guide to CSS Profile fees and waivers explains who qualifies.

What is Middlebury looking for?

A strong academic record and real contribution to the people around you. Middlebury says its review emphasises your academic record, the rigour of your classes, your activities and responsibilities, and your personal essay. It also weighs your potential to contribute to the Middlebury community.

"Responsibilities" matters for a Ghanaian applicant. Helping run a family business or caring for siblings counts. Middlebury asks for no supplemental essay, so your Common App essay carries more weight. Our guide to the Common App activities list shows how to describe your responsibilities.

What should I know about applying from Ghana?

Four things matter most.

Tests are optional. Middlebury accepts self-reported SAT or ACT scores. If you send the ACT, the Science section is not required.

English may already be covered. You need no English test if your secondary classes were taught entirely in English for the last three or four years. Most Ghanaian SHS students should meet that. Otherwise, Middlebury recommends 5.5 on the new TOEFL iBT, 7.0 in IELTS, 130 on Duolingo or Cambridge C1 Advanced.

Send your SHS 3 grades. Middlebury makes no decision without senior grades. For Regular Decision it asks for midyear grades by 15 February. Ask your school to send your first-term SHS 3 results as soon as they are ready.

Interviews are optional. You can request an alumni interview after applying, but Middlebury cannot promise one. It suggests InitialView or Vericant, which charge a fee.

Middlebury's pages do not give a date for final exam results. WASSCE results usually arrive in August, so if you are admitted, ask the admissions office how to send them.

Once there, UMOJA, Middlebury's African Student Organization, has met since 2001 and welcomes anyone interested in the continent.

Should I apply to Middlebury?

Yes, if your record is strong and your list is balanced. The free application costs you nothing but time. Need-aware admission makes a full-aid application from Ghana hard, so no one should count on it.

Pair it with colleges that are need-blind for internationals. Our list of universities that meet full need helps you find them.

What should I do first?

Ask your parents' employers now for signed earnings statements covering January to December 2025. Then start the CSS Profile early, so it is done by 15 November for Early Decision I or 1 February 2027 for Regular Decision.
