WashU financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)

The short answer

Yes, Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) funds Ghanaian students and meets 100 percent of demonstrated need without loans for every admitted undergraduate. Its need-blind policy does not cover international applicants, so asking for aid can be considered in your admission, and you must file the CSS Profile or WashU's own form by your round's aid deadline, starting 17 November 2026.

Does WashU give financial aid to Ghanaian students?

Yes, and generously if you are admitted. WashU says it meets 100 percent of demonstrated need without loans for all admitted undergraduates, and that first-year international applicants are eligible for need-based aid.

The catch is admission. WashU's need-blind policy covers only first-year applicants who are US citizens or permanent residents. WashU says international applicants are not included. So unlike an American, a Ghanaian applicant cannot assume that asking for aid has no effect on the decision.

What that means for your family:

  • Aid can weigh on admission. Plan as if your need is part of the decision, and build a list with need-blind options as well.
  • If admitted, no loans. WashU replaces need-based loans with scholarships, grants and work-study.
  • Apply on time or not at all. WashU says international first-year students who miss the aid deadline for their round will not be considered for aid after the decision or during their years at WashU.

What are WashU's aid rules and deadlines?

Not need-blind for internationals, full need met without loans, and four application rounds with their own aid deadlines. For students entering in autumn 2027, as published on WashU's pages in October 2026:

  • Aid for internationals: not covered by the need-blind policy.
  • Need met: 100 percent of demonstrated need, without loans.
  • Aid forms: CSS Profile (code 6929), or WashU's institutional form if you cannot pay the Profile fee. Supplemental forms if your checklist asks.
  • Early Action: application by 2 November 2026, aid by 17 November, decision and aid offer by 23 December. Not binding.
  • Early Decision I: application by 2 November 2026, aid by 17 November, decision and aid offer by 11 December. Binding.
  • Early Decision II: application by 4 January 2027, aid by 11 January, decision and aid offer by 12 February. Binding.
  • Regular Decision: application by 4 January 2027, aid by 1 February, decision and aid offer by 1 April.
  • Scholarships: apply by 16 December 2026 for priority consideration for the Signature Scholar Programs.
  • Application fee: $75, waived for anyone applying for need-based aid.
  • Tests: SAT or ACT optional.
  • English test: TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo required if English is not your first language, with case-by-case exemptions.
  • Interview: WashU does not offer one. It encourages an InitialView interview supplement.

What would my family actually pay?

That depends on your family's income and assets. WashU sets an amount it expects your family to pay and meets the rest of the cost with aid.

For 2026-27, WashU lists university charges of $96,994: tuition $71,310, a student activity fee of $712, a health and wellness fee of $700, and average housing and food of $24,272. It estimates another $5,266 for books, travel and personal costs, including $1,050 for travel. Budget your own figure for flights from Accra. Health insurance is required on top unless you prove other cover.

WashU offers cost calculators, including a net price calculator. It says its quick Instant Net Price Estimator does not apply to international students, so use the detailed calculator and treat the result as a rough guide. Our guide to using a net price calculator from Ghana shows how to enter cedi figures.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?

Say on your application that you are applying for need-based aid, then submit the CSS Profile by your round's deadline. WashU creates your financial aid account once you have submitted both.

  1. Submit your Common App or Coalition App and mark that you are applying for need-based aid. You can do this before the rest of your application is complete.
  2. Submit the CSS Profile. WashU lists the fee as $25 for the first college and $16 for each additional one. If you cannot pay it, use WashU's institutional aid form, which appears in your WashU Pathway from October after you apply.
  3. Check your Financial Aid Portal. It lists any supplemental forms WashU needs based on your Profile. Send them promptly.
  4. Separated or divorced parents. WashU requires a Profile from both parents' households, and has a waiver request form if you have no contact with one parent.

If you do not apply for aid, WashU requires its International Financial Information form instead, showing how you would pay. Our guide to the CSS Profile fee and waivers explains what to do if the fee is hard to pay from Ghana.

What is WashU looking for?

Academic potential first, then character and what you will add to the community. WashU says it reads your whole transcript, not just your average, looking at the rigour of your courses and the trend in your grades.

Your school choice matters. You apply to one of WashU's undergraduate schools. Architecture, Business and Engineering strongly encourage four years of maths including calculus, and Engineering recommends chemistry and physics. For a Ghanaian science student, Elective Maths and Physics on your WASSCE timetable help show that preparation.

WashU also asks a 250-word question on what you want to study and why. A specific answer rooted in your own life, such as a problem in your town you want to solve, reads far better than a general one.

What should I know about applying from Ghana?

Testing is optional, but you will probably need an English test, and your exam results go in with your transcript.

Testing is optional. WashU is test-optional. International applicants may choose to send the SAT or ACT, or other results such as predicted or actual national exam results. The last test date WashU accepts is in December, or October for Early Action and Early Decision I.

You will probably need an English test. WashU requires TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo from international students whose first language is not English. Its most competitive applicants score around IELTS 7.0, Duolingo 130 or TOEFL 100. From fall 2027 entry, a strong SAT no longer replaces the English test. WashU considers exemptions case by case, so email admissions@wustl.edu if English-medium schooling is your case. Our guide to TOEFL or IELTS helps you choose.

Send exam results, with your transcript. WashU asks international applicants for transcripts, a description of the grading system and examination results such as national exams. Ask admissions whether to send your BECE results. WASSCE results usually arrive in August, after decisions, so tell WashU when to expect them.

Should I apply to WashU?

Yes, if your record is among the strongest in your school. The no-loan, full-need promise and the free institutional form make WashU a strong option for a Ghanaian family that needs aid. Admission is extremely competitive, and because the need-blind policy excludes internationals, no one should count on it.

Early Action gives you an early answer without a binding promise. Early Decision is binding, so use it only if WashU is your clear first choice. Our guide to need-blind and need-aware admission helps you balance the rest of your list.

What should I do first?

Book your English test for no later than October if you want Early Action or Early Decision I, or December for the later rounds. Then gather your parents' income records, so the CSS Profile or WashU's own form is in by your aid deadline.

If you would like help preparing the CSS Profile for WashU and the rest of your list, our Scholarship and Aid Sprint is built for that.
