Colgate financial aid for Ghanaian students (2026-27)

The short answer

Yes, Colgate funds Ghanaian students and meets 100 percent of demonstrated need for every admitted student, including those who need a full package. But it is need-aware, so your need is considered when you are reviewed; file the CSS Profile by 1 November for Early Decision I or 15 January for Early Decision II and Regular Decision.

Does Colgate give financial aid to Ghanaian students?

Yes, but admission is need-aware. Colgate, a liberal arts university in New York State, tells international applicants that it considers financial need during the review of every applicant. If you are admitted, it meets your full demonstrated need.

Here is what that means for you:

  • Need-aware admission. Your request for aid is part of the decision. Colgate's international students are a small group: 49 entered in the class of 2030, about 6 percent of the class.
  • Full need met once admitted. Colgate says it meets 100 percent of demonstrated need for every admitted student, "including those who would require a full financial package".
  • Need-based only. Colgate does not offer academic merit scholarships. There is no prize to chase with grades alone.

The Colgate Commitment, its aid programme for families earning up to $300,000, is for US citizens and permanent residents. It does not apply to a family in Ghana.

What are Colgate's aid rules and deadlines?

The CSS Profile is due on the same day as your application. Here are the rules for students entering in autumn 2027, as published on Colgate's pages in October 2026:

  • Aid for internationals: need-based only, no merit scholarships.
  • Admission: need-aware for all applicants.
  • Need met: 100 percent of demonstrated need for every admitted student.
  • Aid form: CSS Profile, plus IDOC documents if Colgate asks for them.
  • Early Decision I: 1 November, CSS Profile due the same day. Decision in mid-December.
  • Early Decision II: 15 January, CSS Profile due the same day. Decision in mid-February.
  • Regular Decision: 15 January, CSS Profile due the same day. Decision in late March.
  • Application fee: $60, waived for students who are not US citizens.
  • Tests: SAT and ACT optional, with no disadvantage for not sending.
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 4.5, IELTS 7 or Duolingo 130, required.
  • Interview: encouraged, through InitialView or Vericant.

Check each line on Colgate's site before you apply. Policies and dates can change from one cycle to the next.

What would my family actually pay?

What you pay depends on your family's income and assets, measured through the CSS Profile. Without aid, the price is high.

For 2026-27, Colgate lists tuition of $76,828 and total billed costs of $96,646, which cover housing, food and fees. Books, personal costs, health insurance and flights from Accra come on top.

Colgate offers two calculators. Its MyinTuition estimator asks six questions, and its net price calculator goes into more detail. Use the second with your family's real figures in dollars. Our guide to using a net price calculator from Ghana shows how to convert cedi figures.

How do I apply for aid from Ghana?

File the CSS Profile by your application deadline. For international students, that is the only form Colgate requires at the start. The steps:

  1. Submit the Common App and say you are applying for aid.
  2. File the CSS Profile by 1 November or 15 January. If the Profile fee is a real burden, request a waiver code through the financial aid tab in your applicant portal, once Colgate has processed your application.
  3. Send IDOC documents if asked. Colgate may ask for more paperwork through the College Board's IDOC portal, and accepts it only there.
  4. If your parents are separated, each parent files a CSS Profile for their own household.

Colgate treats students under 27 as dependants, so your parents' information is required. International students on aid do not reapply each year.

Colgate's pages do not say what to send if your parents file no tax return, such as a trader paid in cash. Ask the financial aid office before your deadline.

What is Colgate looking for?

Students who bring both intellect and particular talents. Colgate says it values academic achievement, curiosity, commitment and empathy, and it prefers four years each of English and maths, with sciences, social sciences and a foreign language.

It also says the final year of school matters most, because it is the last preparation for university work. Keep your SHS 3 grades strong. Colgate asks for mid-year grades by 15 February.

What should I know about applying from Ghana?

Three things catch Ghanaian applicants out.

The English test is required. Colgate requires TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo and does not waive it on SAT results. Book a test early enough for the score to arrive by your deadline. See TOEFL or IELTS.

Your school must send your documents. Colgate accepts transcripts only from your school, through the Common App, Scoir or post. National exam results must come from the exam board or be emailed by a school official. Ask your headmaster's office early.

Your WASSCE comes after the decision. WASSCE results usually come out in August, after a late-March decision. Send your SHS results so far and mid-year grades, and ask admissions how it wants WASSCE results from WAEC if you are admitted.

Should I apply to Colgate?

Yes, if your record is strong and you want a small liberal arts university, as one part of a wider list. The application is free for you and the SAT is optional. Because admission is need-aware and the international class is small, do not make it your only funded option.

What should I do first?

Run Colgate's net price calculator with your parents this week. Then decide whether Early Decision I on 1 November is realistic. That is two weeks earlier than many colleges, and the CSS Profile is due the same day. If it is not realistic, aim for 15 January.
