Stipendium Hungaricum for Ghanaian students (2026-27)

The short answer

Yes, Ghanaians can win Stipendium Hungaricum, Hungary's government scholarship, but only through the Ghana Scholarships Authority, which must nominate you. You apply online to the scheme and also submit your application to the Authority in Accra. For 2026-27 entry the Authority asked undergraduates for a WASSCE aggregate of 6 to 15 in their most recent results and an age of 23 or under, with a deadline in mid-January.

What is Stipendium Hungaricum?

It is the Hungarian government's scholarship for international students, run by the Tempus Public Foundation. It pays for a full degree at a Hungarian university, mostly in programmes taught in English.

It works through agreements between Hungary and more than 100 partner countries. Ghana is one, and its "sending partner" is the Ghana Scholarships Authority. Hungary considers only applicants their sending partner nominates. Our overview of foreign government scholarships for Ghanaian undergraduates sets it beside the other schemes; this page goes into the detail.

Who can apply from Ghana?

A Ghanaian citizen living in Ghana who meets the Authority's rules. For 2026-27 entry, the Authority asked undergraduates to:

  • Hold the most recent WASSCE results with an aggregate between 6 and 15.
  • Be 23 or under. Stipendium Hungaricum also requires you to be at least 18 by 31 August of the year you start.
  • Have a genuine birth certificate.

"Most recent WASSCE" matters for timing. A student in SHS 3 now will not have results until August 2027, after the 2027-28 deadline. Unless the next notice says otherwise, the realistic route is to apply in the cycle that opens after your results.

For Ghana, Hungary offers bachelor's places in agriculture, arts and humanities, social science, computing and IT, law, economics, engineering, health science, political science, sport science, natural science, and arts and arts education. Degrees such as general medicine, pharmacy and dentistry are "one-tier master's" programmes of five to six years, which cover the bachelor and master levels together. For Ghana, these are open in agriculture, engineering, medical and health science, and teacher training and arts.

What does it cover?

Tuition and a contribution to living costs. The 2026-27 call lists:

  • Tuition: free, for the whole degree.
  • Monthly stipend: HUF 43,700, which the call puts at about EUR 110, for 12 months a year.
  • Housing: a free dormitory place where there is space, or HUF 40,000 (about EUR 100) a month towards rent.
  • Medical insurance: Hungarian state health cover, plus supplementary insurance up to HUF 65,000 a year.

Stipendium Hungaricum says plainly that these amounts do not cover all living costs and that students need money of their own. The call does not list a flight. Plan for the ticket, the visa and a monthly top-up from home.

When are the deadlines?

For 2026-27 entry, these were the dates. The 2027-28 call had not been published when we checked, but expect the same pattern a year later:

How do I apply?

Online and through the Authority. Both parts are required:

  1. Choose up to two programmes on the Stipendium Hungaricum study finder, from the fields open to Ghanaians. You cannot change them, or their order, after the deadline.
  2. Apply online at apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu and upload the required documents, including the scheme's medical certificate form.
  3. Submit to the Authority. Send a written application with photocopies of your certificates, results slips, birth certificate and passport, the online application printout and your phone number, to the Registrar of Scholarships, Scholarships Secretariat, P. O. Box M75, Accra. The office is at the GES Council Building, North Ridge.
  4. Sit the Authority's selection exam if you are invited. In February 2026, 3,810 candidates sat it nationwide.
  5. Sit the university's entrance exam if you are nominated. The university contacts you directly with the date and format.

The Authority says its services are free and that it has engaged no agent to help applicants. Stipendium Hungaricum also advises against applying through agencies. Our guide to scholarship scams explains how to check an offer.

How does selection work?

In three steps. The Ghana Scholarships Authority shortlists and nominates Ghanaian candidates, with a reserve list. The Hungarian universities then test the nominees, and you need at least 56 out of 100 to be considered.

Tempus Public Foundation makes the final allocation. It weighs the Ghana-Hungary agreement, places on each programme, your order of preference, your exam score and your rank on Ghana's nomination list. Science, technology, engineering, maths, agriculture and health applicants get priority. Medicine is among the most competitive fields.

Awards through the Authority can come with a bond to return and serve Ghana, so read the terms before you accept. Our guide to Ghana government scholarships explains the bond.

Should I apply alongside US universities?

Yes, if you would genuinely study in Hungary. Because you need your WASSCE results first, a Hungary application usually falls in the year after SHS, which fits a student who applies to the US in SHS 3 and misses out. Results come at the end of June, so decide in advance which offer you would take.

What should I do first?

Bookmark the Ghana Scholarships Authority's opportunities page and check it from October. While you wait, collect your birth certificate, passport and WASSCE results slips, and look through the programmes on the Stipendium Hungaricum study finder.
